Soumahoro and Kunczewski headline D3football.com All-Region awards; 11 SAA student-athletes honored

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (Dec. 6, 2017) - Led by Mamadou Soumahoro and Tony Kunczewski of Berry, a number of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) football student-athletes were honored on the  D3football.com 2017 All-South Region team. Soumahoro was named South Region Defensive Player of the Year, while Kunczewski was named the South Region Coach of the Year.

Along with those honors, Miles Thompson (QB-Hendrix), Nate Hodapp (WR-Hendrix), and Soumahoro (DE-Berry) were named D3football.com All-South Region First-Team selections. Mason Kinsey (WR-Berry), Tristen Cline (TE-Berry), Tim Grabenstein (T-Birmingham-Southern), Joel Holmes (G-Trinity), D.J. Coker (T-Rhodes), Jamal Watkins (KR-Birmingham-Southern), Alejandro Anzaldua (DT-Trinity), and Cal Lewellyn (CB-Centre) were named to the D3football.com All-South Region Third-Team.
 
The 2017 D3football.com All-Region teams are presented by the City of Salem, hosts of Stagg Bowl XLV, to be played on Friday, Dec. 15, in Salem, Virginia. Kunczewski, who led the Vikings to a perfect 10-0 regular season and a playoff win in the program's fifth year of existence, is the South Region Coach of the Year. It's his first selection as a D3football.com Regional Coach of the Year. Soumahoro, a senior from Lawrenceville, Georgia, recorded 14 sacks and forced two fumbles from his defensive end position in helping lead Berry to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. He finished the season with 57 tackles, 38 of them solo, including 15 tackles for loss, four pass breakups and two blocked kicks.
 
The teams, selected in balloting by South Region sports information directors and D3football.com staff, were chosen from 240 nominations by Division III member schools. A total of 75 players were chosen. Players nominated for All-Region are eligible to be considered for D3football.com All-America honors, which will be announced the evening of Dec. 15, in D3football.com's pregame coverage for Stagg Bowl XLV.
