MINNEAPOLIS (July 31, 2018) — Four Southern Athletic Association (SAA) football student-athletes have been named to the D3football.com Preseason All-American Team.
Senior D.J. Coker, a tackle from Rhodes, was named to the Preseason All-American Second-Team while junior Hendrix quarterback Miles Thompson, senior Trinity guard Joel Holmes, and junior Centre cornerback Cal Lewellyn were all named to the Preseason All-American Third-Team.
Last year Coker earned second-team All-America honors by the American Football Coaches Association and earned All-South Region honors by D3football.com. The left tackle was an All-SAA First-Team selection in 2017 after helping the Rhodes offense average 468.6 yards per game, including 1,952 rushing yards and 21 total rushing touchdowns.
A year ago, Thompson was one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. Thompson set records in the SAA for total touchdowns (47), passing touchdowns (37), and points accounted for. He also led the league in completions (238), attempts (363), completion percentage (65.6), passing yards (3,472), yards per game (347.2), and passing efficiency (175.1). Additionally, Thompson scored at least five touchdowns in four different games and set a new SAA record with eight touchdowns against Rhodes on Nov. 4th. He also led the nation in points responsible for and total offense.
Last year, Holmes was a 2017 D3football.com All-South Region Third-Team selection. Holmes graded out at 92 percent and recorded 65 pancake/knockdown blocks. Holmes was a 2017 All-SAA First-Team selection.
Finally, Lewellyn was a 2017 All-SAA First-Team selection as a sophomore. The Colonel defensive back finished with 31 tackles and two interceptions. In 2016, Lewellyn was the SAA Newcomer of the Year.
