DANVILLE, Ky. (Nov. 8, 2017) – A goal by Savannah Elpers in overtime sent the Centre field hockey team to the NCAA "Sweet 16" as the Colonels defeated Washington & Jefferson, 3-2, Wednesday at South Campus Field.
After W&J scored first early in the first half, Centre answered back with a goal from Brooklyn Bell in the 25th minute. Again, Centre and W&J traded goals in the second half. Washington & Jefferson retook the lead at 44:32 when Claire Shaak scored. However, just two minutes later, the Colonels answered back. Again it was Bell who ripped in a shot from Elpers.
That set up the overtime with both teams tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation. Overall, Centre outshot W&J 13-8. The Colonels also finished with a 7-2 advantage in corners. Along with the offense, Centre goalkeeper Kristen Mulcahy was outstanding with three saves.
Centre now advances to the NCAA "Sweet 16" this Saturday and will meet 12th-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The Sweet 16 and Elite Eight on the Colonels' bracket will be hosted by The College of New Jersey in Trenton, N.J.
