MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Sept 13, 2017) - Rhodes College Director of Athletics, Jeff Cleanthes, announced that Matt Lamb has been elevated to the position of head men's soccer coach. Andy Marcinko, who has led the program the last 26 years, has stepped down, citing personal and family reasons, and will assume the role as assistant coach.
"Coach Marcinko has meant a tremendous amount to the Rhodes community and both of our soccer programs for almost three decades," said Cleanthes. "Being able to assist him in this transition was my main priority."
Lamb has been an assistant to Marcinko since the 2014 season and before joining the men's staff, spent one season at the University of Maine at Farmington. "Matt is one of the best coaches I have worked with over my 35 years of college coaching," commented Marcinko. "We are very confident in his abilities to keep the men's soccer program moving forward."
"I'm excited to step into the role of head coach and I'm honored to continue learning from Coach Marcinko as he supports me in this transition," said Lamb. "I'd like to thank Coach Cleanthes and Coach Marcinko for having the confidence in me to lead this program and continue building on the foundation of success Coach Marcinko has built over the past 26 years."
"I feel Coach Lamb has the ability to continue the great work that Coach Marcinko has accomplished here at Rhodes," said Cleanthes. "He has shown an incredible work ethic the last three years and is very deserving of this opportunity."
In 18 of his 26 seasons as head coach of the Lynx, Marcinko's teams had a .500 or better record with 14 seasons of 10 wins or more. Along the way, he has captured three SCAC conference titles and six second place finishes. The veteran coach has been selected SCAC Coach of the Year four times, and his teams have been nationally ranked and have competed in four NCAA National Tournaments. Nineteen of Marcinko's players have been selected to All-Region teams and three have been named All-Americans while his teams have also been awarded the NSCAA/ADIDAS Academic Team Award 14 times.
