ATLANTA - The SAA announced the men's and women's tennis Players of the Week for matches played April 10 -16 and, after voting by the league head coaches, Alex Makarenko of Birmingham-Southern cliamed Men's Tennis Player of the Week while Oglethorpe's Taylor Cranford captured Women's Tennis Player of the Week.
SAA Men's Tennis Player of the Week - Alex Makarenko of Birmingham-Southern
Alex Makarenko (pictured at right) of BSC had an outstanding weekend of tennis. He was perfect for the weekend with a 4-0 record. He won both his singles matches at #2 position against Berry's Griffin Davis 6-2,6-2 and Oglethorpe's D. Bowie 6-3,6-1. He also won both matches at #2 doubles with Jamie Bekaert by defeating Berry's Miner/Gooding 8-4 and Oglethorpe's Bowie/Bertram 8-1.
SAA Women's Tennis Player of the Week - Taylor Cranford of Oglethorpe
Oglethorpe freshman Taylor Cranford had a terrific weekend going undefeated at #4 singles and #2 doubles in their 5-4 win over Millsaps and 6-3 win over BSC. She paired with Shannon Cruz in beating Barbier/Beck 8-3 giving Oglethorpe a 2-1 lead. She fought through cramps in besting MC Sharp 6-3, 6-4 giving the Petrels the opportunity for the win. Against BSC, Cranford/Cruz won a tight 8-6 over Wisener/Carroll giving Oglethorpe a sweep in doubles . She then defeated Lioce 7-5,6-4 giving Oglethorpe their 4th point and putting them on the brink of winning. She is now 5-1 in conference play at 3/4 singles; and 3-1 at #2 doubles.

Henry Friedler of Millsaps continues to have an impressive first season with the Majors. Over the weekend, Henry went 4-0 winning all singles (number 3) and doubles (number 3) matches. Against Oglethorpe, Henry, partnered with Jacob Niehaus, extended the Majors lead to 3-0 after doubles winning their match 8-2. In singles, Henry wrapped up the victory for Millsaps taking his match 6-2, 6-3. Against Berry, Henry and Jacob sealed the 3-0 lead with an 8-2 win. In singles, Henry was first off the court taking his match in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to give Millsaps the win. His only losses in doubles or singles in SAA play this year were to Sewanee.
Maggie Dabadie of Millsaps continued her impressive freshman year wrapping up SAA regular season competition. Maggie went 4-0 over the weekend winning all her singles (number 2) and doubles (number 1) matches. Maggie, partnered with Ashley Ford, got the Majors on the board first against Oglethorpe winning 8-5. Maggie continued her consistent play into her singles match winning 7-5, 6-4. Against Berry, Maggie and Ashley got the lone doubles point, winning 8-5. Moving into singles, Maggie helped solidify the 6-3 win for Millsaps taking her match in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. She is 5-2 at #2 singles and 5-2 at #1 doubles this year in SAA play.
Playing #1 singles against Rhodes, Christina Merchant of Sewanee won 6-2,6-2. Playing #2 doubles against Hendrix, Christina won 8-0. Switching off all year between the 1,2 and 3 positions, Merchant has a 10-4 singles record and at the #2 doubles position, Merchant is 12-4. Merchant remains undefeated in the SAA in singles and doubles.
