BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (October 29, 2022) – Berry won a close battle with runner-up Oglethorpe on Saturday to capture the program’s second-straight Southern Athletic Association men’s cross country championship.
Berry grabbed four of the top-10 places to score 34 points, nine better than their winning score last season. Oglethorpe also had a quartet in the top-10 and were second with 47 points. Centre (68) and Rhodes (91) rounded out the top-five teams.
The Vikings Bradshaw Lathbury repeated as SAA Runner of the Year, cruising to a victory in 25:16.5. His time was the fourth-fastest in SAA championship history as 36 seconds faster than his winning time a year ago. Jared Briant of Rhodes moved his way through the pack late to finish runner-up in 25:58.8. Oglethorpe’s Ashton Deriso was third in 26:05.8.
Reeve VanDemark of Centre was named the SAA Newcomer of the Year, taking fourth place in 26:06. Zachary Benner of Oglethorpe grabbed the last spot in the top five, clocking 26:06.1.
Birmingham-Southern served as host of the championship at Veteran’s Park in Hoover, Alabama.
