ATLANTA, Ga. (April 17, 2023) – The Southern Athletic Association has announced its athletes of the week for April 17. Men’s and women’s lacrosse have completed their regular seasons and are set for the postseason beginning this weekend. The remaining spring sports wind down regular seasons this week and begin championship play the following weekend.
SAA Spring Championships Information
BASEBALL
Player of the Week: Zach Marriott / Hendrix / Junior / Oakville, Ontario
Marriott hit .583 with a 1.084 slugging percentage in three games for the Warriors last week. The junior was 7-of-12 at the plate with a double, triple, and homer. He drove in three runs and scored five times in the SAA series against Berry.
Pitcher of the Week: Matt Munn / Sewanee / Sophomore / Bellaire, Texas
Munn picked up the win against Oglethorpe, tossing seven innings and scattering five hits with one earned run. The sophomore racked up an incredible 14 strikeouts, the most by a conference pitcher this season.
SOFTBALL
Player of the Week: Alice Charboneau / Sewanee / Senior / Manassas, Va.
Charboneau had a monster two games against Mississippi University for Women, hitting .714 in the two games. The senior was 5-of-7 at the dish, driving in four runs and scoring three of her own. Charboneau tallied a double, triple, and home run and did not strikeout during the week.
Pitcher of the Week: Hannah Gore / Berry / Sophomore / Roswell, Ga.
Gore picked up two wins during the week, allowing no runs and just six hits in 11 innings in the circle. The sophomore racked up 13 strikeouts, including eight in four innings against Millsaps, while issuing only one walk.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Offensive Player of the Week: Ryan Black / Centre / Freshman / Duluth, Ga.
Black was huge in Centre’s win over previous SAA unbeaten Sewanee, scoring seven goals and adding an assist in the de facto conference regular season championship game. The newcomer got the Colonels off to a fast start, scoring three goals within the first six minutes to put Centre up big early.
Defensive Player of the Week: Nick English / Berry / Senior / Georgetown, Texas
English led Berry to a win over Oglethorpe, picking up 13 ground balls to bolster the Vikings defense. The veteran face off won 15-of-22 faceoffs in the match
WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Offensive Player of the Week: Haley Larsen / Berry / Junior / Grandville, Mich.
Larsen tallied nine goals with an assist in two games for Berry last week. Against Oglethorpe, the junior found the back of the net seven times on 11 shots while also grabbing an assist. She tallied two more goals against Rhodes while winning 10 draw controls against the Lynx.
Defensive Player of the Week: Caroline Short / Birmingham-Southern / Junior / Franklin, Tenn.
Short led BSC to a win over Hendrix that was big for conference tournament seeding. The junior picked up eight ground balls and caused six turnovers in the Panthers’ 18-3 win.
MEN’S TENNIS
Singles Player of the Week: Noah Koch / Berry / Sophomore / Kansas City, Mo.
Against Sewanee, Koch dropped the first set in his singles match against Jordan Theron, ranked as the No. 2 singles player in the Atlantic South region. Koch would rally back quickly, earning early breaks to take the second set 6-1. In the final set, Koch would stay hot, picking up a 6-2 win to earn a victory. He would also earn straight sets win over Faraz Ghamgosar of Centre the next day.
Doubles Players of the Week:
Bo Bush / Centre / Junior / Louisville, Ky.
Ty Bush / Centre / Freshman / Louisville, Ky.
Bo and Ty went 2-0 on the weekend at No. 1 doubles. The due defeated Oglethorpe’s top doubles team of Kiker and Burkes 8-4. Bush and Bush then came back to win 8-2 against Lopez and Koch of Berry.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Singles Player of the Week: Emma Smith / Sewanee / Senior / Mount Pleasant, S.C.
Smith went undefeated last weekend in SAA play. The senior defeated No. 1 Juliana Mascagni from Berry 6-2,6-2 and No. 1 Izzy Forster from Oglethorpe 6-1,6-0.
Doubles Players of the Week:
Carlie Mitchell / Centre / Freshman / Nashville, Tenn.
Grace Williams / Centre / Freshman / Signal Mountain, Tenn.
Carlie Mitchell and Grace Williams went 2-0 on the weekend at at the No. 2 doubles position. The pair won 8-6 over Merletti and Salguerio from Oglethorpe and 8-4 over Craig and Manning from Berry.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Track Athlete of the Week: Jared Briant / Rhodes / Senior / Collierville, Tenn.
Briant competed in the steeplechase at the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational in New Jersey over the weekend. He was the top non-Division I finisher, taking 10
th in a time of 9:07.00, the top time in the SAA and ninth-best in Division III this season.
Field Athlete of the Week: Jordan McQueen / Oglethorpe / Freshman / Kapolei, Hawaii
At the Berry Field Day Invitational, McQueen was runner-up in men's triple jump with a mark of 13.42 meters to open the weekend. The freshman then won the men's long jump with a season best mark of 6.97 meters on the second day.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Track Athlete of the Week: Macy Murdock / Berry / Freshman / Tallulah Falls, Ga.
Murdock won the 400m hurdles in a PR time of 1:04.62 at the Berry Field Day Invitational. The time is a new school record and ranked No. 1 in the SAA, No. 3 in the region and No. 28 in the nation. The freshman also She placed fourth in the 400m dash with a new personal best of 1:00.04, landing No. 2 in the SAA and 16 in the region.
Field Athlete of the Week: Lauren Foutch / Centre / Junior / Somerset, Ky.
Lauren had an outstanding meet this past weekend at the Centre Invitational, the site of the upcoming SAA Championship. The junior competed in three throws and won them all in a field full of teams from all divisions. She recorded marks of 12.37m in the shot put, 41.54m in the discus and 44.60m in the hammer throw, breaking a more than a decade-old school record in the event. Lauren is currently ranked first in the SAA in all three throws events as well as top 25 in all of NCAA Division III in the discus.
