Birmingham-Southern's Trey Hines Named SAA Man of the Year

ATLANTA, Ga. (June 15, 2023) – Birmingham-Southern standout men's soccer player Trey Hines has been named the Southern Athletic Association 2022-23 Man of the Year, it was announced by Commissioner Jay Gardiner.
 
The highest honor given by the SAA, the Man/Woman of the Year is voting is conducted among the conference's eight athletic directors.
 
Hines was a four-year letter winner and three-time team captain, leading the Panthers to their first SAA Tournament title and NCAA Championship appearance in his senior year. The Cumming, Georgia native recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from BSC, majoring in Business Administration with a minor in Psychology. 
 
Hines was described by his nominators as "the glue of the team" and head coach Greg Vinson noted he not only excelled in the classroom and on the field but also in his relationships with teammates and dedication to the campus community.
 
After landing on the All-SAA second team as a sophomore, Hines earned All-SAA first team honors each of the last two seasons. In 2022, he twice was named SAA Player of the Week. He tallied 11 goals and five assists last season with his four scores in conference play tied for the league lead. Hines didn't come off the field in each of the last 12 games, including playing all 110 minutes against Berry in the SAA title game and successfully converting a shootout attempt that helped lift BSC to the championship. 
 
After the season, Hines was recognized by both College Sports Communicators and United Soccer Coaches as an Academic All-American.
 
Off the field, Hines was on the BSC Dean's List every semester of his career, earning the Hilltop Business Leaders Award and joining the Sigma Beta Delta Business Honor Society and Psi Chi Psychology Honor Society. In the community, Hines participated in the Ronald McDonald House Red Shoe Run and hosted games and practices for the Exceptional Foundation Soccer Team, a non-profit organization assisting special needs members of Greater Birmingham. He also volunteered countless hours working events for all BSC athletic programs.
 
After graduation, Hines was named the head Sports Information Director at Birmingham-Southern and will continue serving his alma mater. He is the first BSC SAA Man of the Year. Former Panthers Elizabeth Bromirski (2014), Rebecca Erwin (2020), and Abby Kay Choate (2021) were winners of the SAA Woman of the Year.
 
The Man and Woman of the Year awards, selected by a committee comprised of SAA Athletic Directors, are given to the senior class male and female nominees who best exemplify traits of leadership, character, athletic, and academic success. The criteria for SAA Man and Woman of the Year nominees included that they must be a senior with no eligibility remaining, they must have been named First Team All-SAA in the sport in which they participated during their athletic careers, and they must have qualified for the SAA Academic Honor Roll during their tenure as a student-athlete. Additionally, SAA Man and Woman of the Year candidates are expected to be involved in their local community in some meaningful way.
