CANTON, Ga. (November 1, 2024) – The Southern Athletic Association has announced its women’s soccer All-Conference teams and major award winners for the 2024 season.
Regular season champion Sewanee swept the Player of the Year awards with Brianna Fee repeating as the best offensive player in the conference and teammate Ashlyn Richards earning the award on defense. Tigers leader Greg Cathell was named the Coach of the Year and Centre first year Claire Cavacini was voted the Newcomer of the Year.
All-SAA voting and selection of the All-Sportsmanship team was conducted among the conference’s seven head coaches.
Offensive Player of the Year – Brianna Fee (Sewanee/Senior/Lee’s Summit, Mo.) – The most prolific scorer in the conference over the past two seasons, Fee is the fifth player in SAA history to repeat as Offensive Player of the Year. The Lee’s Summit, Mo. native led the conference with six goals in six conference games and score nine goals overall. Fee twice had a brace in conference play, scoring two goals each against Oglethorpe and Millsaps.
Defensive Player of the Year – Ashlyn Richards (Sewanee/Senior/Charlotte, N.C.) – The architect of defense that allowed just one goal in conference play and four all season, Richards is the second Tiger to earn Defensive Player of the Year honors. An All-SAA first team selection a year ago, Richards logged the most minutes for the conference champs, playing 1418 during the season. Her squad had six shutouts and held every SAA opponent to nine shots or less. Richards also helped on the offensive end with two goals and six assists.
Newcomer of the Year – Claire Cavacini (Centre/First Year/Fort Thomas, Ky.) – Scoring a goal in the first game of her collegiate career, Cavacini made an immediate impact to the Colonels attack. The first year totaled four goals and three assists on the season and finished second on the team with 11 points. She had a huge game against Hendrix, scoring the game’s only two goals, and also had assists in wins over Oglethorpe and Millsaps. Cavacini is the fifth Colonel to be voted SAA Newcomer of the Year.
Coach of the Year – Greg Cathell (Sewanee/Fourth Season) – For the third straight season, Sewanee’s Greg Cathell was voted Coach of the Year by his peers. He led the Tigers to a second-straight undefeated conference season and boasts 10 All-Conference performers, including two Players of the Year.
