CANTON, Ga. (November 16, 2024) – For the first time in Southern Athletic Association history, three teams finished the year with identical records as Berry, Centre, and Trinity will share the 2024 SAA football championship.
All three schools went 8-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Berry beat Centre, but lost to Trinity. Centre beat Trinity and lost to Berry. Trinity won over Berry and fell to Centre.
Berry earned the SAA’s automatic bid into the NCAA Playoff by way of the league’s establish tiebreaking procedures. The three schools were deadlocked through the first three criteria until the Vikings finally earned an edge by having the best overall opponents winning percentage among the tied teams.
Trinity’s league title is a fourth-straight and fifth overall since joining the SAA in 2017. The Tigers are 28-1 in league play over the last four seasons. Berry locked up its sixth title – the most of any school – and first since winning five-straight from 2016-2021. Centre earned a third SAA title and first since 2018.
The last shared title was in 2019 between Berry and Trinity. The Vikings won over the Tigers in the regular season and earned the AQ. In 2018, Berry and Centre were co-champions. The Vikings won 38-35 in OT against Centre during the season to win the automatic bid and the Colonels earned an at-large spot in the bracket.
