ATLANTA – The #10 Trinity University women's tennis team was upset by #14 Washington & Lee University (WA) in a 4-1 loss in the second round of the NCAA Playoffs on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (17-2) had their 15-match winning streak snapped in the loss to the Generals (21-2) today. This was Trinity's fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Playoffs under Head Coach
Drew Cohn, after winning the Southern Athletic Association Tournament in the first year in the new conference.
Trinity fell behind early as W&L snagged the doubles point with wins at lines two and three.
Katie Schmidt (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) and
Lauren Tin (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) lost 6-1 at two doubles, while
Eva Kovachev (Arlington, Texas / The Oakridge School) and
Allison Vo (Sugar Land, Texas / Elkins) were beaten 6-4 at line three. The #1 doubles team of
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) and
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Prep School) were tied 5-5 when the point was clinched.
The Tigers won the opening set in four of the six singles matches, with Schmidt falling 6-2 at line five and Tin dropping the first 6-1. Schmidt wound up losing 7-5 in the second to make it a 2-0 lead for Washington & Lee and then Tin lost 6-4 to bring the Generals within one point of clinching. Levy won in straight sets at line four 6-2, 6-3 to get Trinity on the board at 3-1. After winning the first set at line one 7-5, Kovachev fell 6-2, 6-4 in the next two sets, and Washington & Lee completed the upset.
Andrade split the first two sets 6-3, 3-6 and was leading 5-4 in the third at line two singles when the match was clinched.
Astrid Kerrman (Edina, Minn. / Edina) also split her first two sets at line six 6-2, 2-6 and had rallied to a 5-5 tie when the match ended.

Kovachev qualified for the NCAA Singles Championships and will compete May 22-25 at the Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tenn. Andrade and Levy were chosen as doubles alternates.
