HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fl. - Sewanee took fourth overall at the Division III Men's Golf championship while Ryan Dunn from Oglethorpe had the highest finish individually in the SAA with a seventh overall finish.
The Tigers posted their best round of the week with an eight-under 280 team score, moving up six spots into fourth place in the final standings. All of the Sewanee players started their rounds at No. 10.
Chiles finished with a flourish after three straight rounds above par, shooting the second-best round of the tournament, trailing only a 65 posted by Washington and Lee's Tim Kaufman on Wednesday.
Chiles birdied the par-5 10
th hole before a bogey at 12, but then he made four pars with birdies on the par-5 14
th and the par-5 17
thholes to complete the back nine. The Houston, Texas, native added four more birdies on the front side, on holes one (another par-5), six, eight and nine, carding a 31 on the front nine for his six-under par 66. He moved up 34 spots individually, finishing with a four-day total of 291, tied for 35
th.
Tudor started the day with birdies on holes 10 and 14 and was two-under on the back. The New Market, Md., native made another birdie at No. 1 but collected bogeys on holes five and nine, carding a one-under 71 for a 72-hole score of 287, tied for 20th.
Becker ended his Sewanee career with a final-round 71 as well that included 15 pars. The Mexico City, Mexico, native collected seven pars with birdies on the par-3 15
th hole and No. 17 on the back nine. On the front he registered eight pars and one bogey, posting a four-day total of 297, tied for 56th.
Sophomore
Niel Phillips played an up-and-down round Friday that ended at even-par 72. He netted five pars with two bogeys and birdies on holes 14 and 16 on the back nine. The New Orleans, La., native also made two bogeys on the front with birdies on holes three and nine for a 72-hole score of 294, tied for 49th.
Senior
Colin Edwards got off to a good start with three pars and birdies on Nos. 13 and 14, but he bogeyed three of the last four holes on the back nine. The Brookhaven, Ga., native recorded two double bogeys on the front but ended the day with a birdie at No. 9, shooting four-over 76 for a four-day total of 291.
Ryan Dunn and
Jackson Hiller both fired 71 on the final day of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championships, leading Oglethorpe to a 16th-place finish at Mission Resort and Club. The Stormy Petrels bounced back after a tough third day to secure their sixth straight top-16 finish at the national championships.
Dunn, who was the individual leader through 36 holes of the event, settled in to seventh overall, marking the seventh highest national finish by a Petrel all-time. He finished 4 under par after two sub-70 rounds across the first two days then a 1 under par 71 to finish out the tournament.
Hiller followed next behind Dunn at 3 over for the tournament to take 33rd and was named to the all-America first team during the post-tourney awards ceremony. Hiller previously this season earned Southern Athletic Association athlete of the year honors after medaling at the conference championships. He also earned PING all-region and was named a finalist for the Jack Nicklaus national player of the year award.
Sophomore
Ryan Callaham and freshman
Barton Abstein both stepped up in a big way for the Petrels in their championships debut. Callaham landed 192nd overall after bookending his week with a pair of 75s. Abstein finished one stroke and four places behind in 196th. He posted his best scores on the first two days, shooting 74 at Las Colinas then 76 on El Campeon.
Sophomore
Corbin Scott, making his second appearance at the national championships, posted solid rounds on days two and three. He placed 218th overall.
For Trinity, they finished just one stroke outside the cut line after two rounds at +27, narrowly missing the chance to advance to the final rounds of competition.
Carter Code (Calgary, Alberta, Canada / Manning) led the Tigers with a 3 over 75 in the second round to finish the tournament at +4 overall. Code battled through difficulties before steadying his round, highlighted by birdies on holes one and six. He finished tied for 51st individually.
Aiden Marlow (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill) carded a 4 over 76 in round two to also finish at +4 overall and tied for 51st. Marlow bounced back after a challenging start, recording birdies on holes sixteen and fourteen to keep the Tigers within striking distance of the cut line throughout the afternoon.
Jeffery Forster (Santa Barbara, Calif. / San Marcos) posted a 4 over 76 in the second round and finished +9 overall. Forster continued to provide consistency for the Tiger's lineup.
Ethan Sullivan (Norfolk, Mass. / King Philip) finished the championship at +11 after a second round 77. Sullivan stayed composed throughout the day and picked up a birdie on hole 14.
Sam Rossi (Los Angeles, Calif. / Loyola) rounded out the Trinity lineup with a 7 over 79 in round two to finish +12 overall. Rossi stayed consistent while battling through the demanding conditions at El Campeón.
From Southwestern, Ethan Bridges missed the cut narrowly after the second round. He first round of +7 left room for growth and he came back with a -3 in round two to catch up at +4 overall to narrowly miss the finals cut for individuals.
