ATLANTA (Sept. 9, 2019) – The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has announced that Clark Payne (Centre), Jacob Bremmon (Hendrix), and Andrew Byrd (Millsaps) have been named SAA Football Player of the Week winners.
Offense - Clark Payne - Quarterback - Centre
In his first collegiate start, Payne had a day to remember, completing 16-of-27 passes for 277 yards and five touchdowns. His performance led Centre to a win over the reigning HCAC champion Hanover. Payne spread the ball around for Centre's young receiving corps, completing passes to 10 different receivers and leading the Colonels to touchdowns on five of their first six drives. Payne also played the entire game without throwing an interception or taking a sack.
Defense - Jacob Bremmon - Defensive Back - Hendrix
Bremmon picked off a Lyon pass in the second quarter and returned it 39 years for a touchdown. That helped make the difference, as the Warriors topped their in-state rivals, 28-20. Bremmon also finished with eight tackles.
Special Teams - Andrew Byrd - Punter - Millsaps
Byrd was key in the field possession battle as the Millsaps punter averaged 41.5 yards per kick. Along with a long of 46, three of his four punts were not returnable. Two were fair caught and another put rival Belhaven in bad starting field possession after it pinned inside the Blazers' 20-yard line.
