ATLANTA (Oct. 14, 2019) – The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) has announced that Robert Shufford (Birmingham-Southern), Clayton Bell (Centre), and Mason Kinsey (Berry) have been named SAA Football Player of the Week winners.
Offense - Robert Shufford - Junior Running Back - Birmingham-Southern
Four the fourth straight week, Shufford reached the 100-yard mark. He finished with 133 rushing yards on just 14 carries. That was an average of 9.6 yards per touch. He also scored a touchdown on the ground in the 46-7 win over Rhodes.
Along with his rushing stats, Shufford added one catch that went for a touchdown also. Overall, Shufford leads the SAA in rushing at 136.4 yards per game.
Defense - Clayton Bell - Junior Defensive Lineman - Centre
Bell was key on the defensive side of the ball for the Colonels. In a 24-21 win against Sewanee, Bell finished with three sacks, three tackles for a loss, and four total stops. Along with his stats, Bell made plays when it mattered. With Centre clinging to its lead, Bell had two of his sacks on the Tigers' final drive. Those sacks secured the win for the Colonels.
Special Teams - Mason Kinsey - Senior Returner - Berry
Kinsey led No. 7 Berry to a 27-9 victory over previously unbeaten Hendrix, Saturday. He earned 248 all-purpose yards, which is the second most in Berry football history. Kinsey scored the first touchdown of the game on the final play of the first quarter. He caught a 36-yard pass from Gavin Gray to put the Vikings up 10-0. Before the half, he returned a 97-yard kickoff for a touchdown, setting the program record for longest kick return and just the second kickoff return for a score in Berry's history.
He also tied a program record with 10 receptions, collecting 136 receiving yards, and a score.
