ATLANTA (April 25, 2018) – The Southern Athletic Association (SAA) announced the 2019 All-SAA Softball awards, Thursday. The award winners were selected exclusively by the league's head softball coaches and members of the SAA office.
Katilin Seger of Berry was named SAA Player of the Year. Haley Crumpton of Birmingham-Southern was named the SAA Pitcher of the Year while Panther junior Bailey Murphy captured the league's SAA Newcomer of the Year honor. Finally, after leading BSC to the SAA Regular Season Championship and a top-10 national ranking, BSC Head Coach Kimball Cassady was named the SAA Coach of the Year.
Seger was the catalyst to a strong Berry offense. The Viking ranked in among the SAA leaders in seven offensive categories. She led the SAA in hits (55), ranked seventh in homeruns (5), second in RBI (43), and fourth in total bases (81). Her .414 average ranked sixth while she finished second in sacrifice flies.
Inside the circle, Crumpton was outstanding for one of the top teams in the country. The left-hander dominated opponents in her 98.0 innings pitched. She led the league in strikeouts (122), strikeouts per game (8.71), and earned run average (1.79). Opponents only hit .189 against her while her 11 complete games led the conference.
Additionally, she led the conference with four saves and ranked first with 13 wins.
Murphy ranked among the league's best offensive players. The freshman was third in doubles (12), fourth in RBI (39), fifth in total bases (78), and 12th in average (.377). She also ranked seventh in on-base percentage (.736).
Finally, Cassady led BSC to a 31-5 overall record. The nationally-ranked Panthers finished with a 13-2 mark in SAA play. Along with their wins, BSC ranked in the top-two among SAA teams in homeruns, slugging percentage, earned run average, shutouts, opponents batting average.
