ATLANTA (Sept. 27, 2019) - Hendrix will travel to Birmingham-Southern for a 12:00 p.m. (CST) contest Sunday in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Game of the Week.
The Panthers and Warriors currently sit atop the league standings with perfect 3-0 records. BSC is currently 9-3 overall while Hendrix will enter weekend play at 9-2.
Birmingham-Southern has won its last three matches, all conference contests. The Panthers opened SAA play by outlasting then No. 5 Berry on the road, 3-2. BSC then topped both Oglethorpe and Millsaps with 3-1 victories.
Birmingham-Southern is led by recently named AVCA National Player of the Week, Rebecca Erwin. The senior middle blocker posted 14 kills and a .219 attack percentage in the win at Berry. Then against OU, she added 12 kills and hit .579. Last week, Erwin was consistent, with a .399 attack percentage and helping the Panthers win six of nine sets. Along with Erwin, who also leads the league in blocks per set, Panther libero Caroline Johnson has been outstanding.
The senior defender has 188 digs and is averaging 6.13 digs per set at home. With that, BSC is a perfect 6-0 inside the friendly confines of Bill Battle Coliseum.
Hendrix travels to the Magic City with two nationally ranked wins this season. Earlier this fall in non-conference action, the Warriors defeated then No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis and swept the No. 24 Illinois Wesleyan. Since September 14, Hendrix has won five straight matches. All five of those contests were 3-0 shutouts.
Individually, Mallory Carty has been unstoppable. The middle blocker hit .607 last week with 19 kills in six sets. She averaged 3.16 kills per set and currently ranks second in the SAA in hitting percentage.
Along with Carty, senior Lauren Dwyer continues to play well. Dwyer finished with 26 digs last week and is a two-way player with impressive offensive and defensive skills. Along with her average of 3.68 digs per set, Dwyer ranks third in the league with 3.27 kills per set.
