Tournament Seeding: The seeds for the SAA Baseball Tournament shall be determined based on each team’s finish in the final regular season standings. Standings are determined based on the team’s conference winning percentage. The regular season champion shall earn the top seed in the tournament. If two or more teams are tied on top of the standings, co-regular season champions will be named, and the below tie-breaking procedure will determine seeds.
Tie-breaking procedure:
-
Head-to-head record during the conference series between the two teams that are tied. If more than two teams are tied, use the tie-breaking procedure detailed below.
-
Head-to-head with all the teams tied. If one team has the best record against each other they will be awarded the higher seed. If more than 2 teams are still tied after that we repeat that process until we are down to 1 or 2 teams. If we get to 2 teams we revert back to (a), a head-to-head record.
For example: Teams A, B, C are tied. Team A has a combined 4-2 record vs B & C, while both B and C have combined records of 2-4 vs the other two teams. Team A would be awarded the higher seed. Teams B and C would then revert to a head-to-head tiebreaker.
-
Teams A, B, and C are tied. Team A has a combined record of 4-2 vs. B & C, Team B has a combined record of 4-2 vs. A & C, and Team C has a combined record of 1-5 vs. A & B. Team C would be removed, and it would be head-to-head A vs. B. Let’s say team A won 2 of 3 from B, A would get the higher seed and then team B would go head-to-head with team C for the next highest seed. At any step when it comes to head-to-head, if the 2 teams did not play the full series and ended up going 1-1, we move to C below.
-
If through these first three steps we still have a tie, record vs. highest seeded team in the conference continuing in a descending manner, not including the teams in the conversation until the tie is broken.
-
All remaining ties will be broken by using the final NCAA Power Index (NPI) rankings.
