SAA 2023 Volleyball Report - Week 1

Atlanta, Ga. – Southern Athletic Association volleyball teams played 27 matches across the country during opening weekend, posting a combined 15-12 record. Sewanee led the way going 4-0 while Oglethorpe is also perfect on the year at 1-0. No. 11 Berry beat eighth-ranked Transylvania and fell to seventh-ranked Calvin as part of 2-1 season opening trip to Lexington. Rhodes, Millsaps, and Centre also picked up a pair of wins.

Athletes of the Week:
OFFENSIVE: Anna Capezzera | Millsaps | Junior | Jacksonville, Fla. – Cepezzera led Millsaps to a split of our matches in the season opening weekend. The junior averaged 4.06 kills a set and hit .222 and added five service aces. After the opening weekend, she leads the SAA in kills per set and total kills while sitting second in points scored. Cepezzera was named to the Cajun Classic All-Tournament Team.
 
DEFENSIVE: Adele Cassidy | Sewanee | Senior | Tampa, Fla. – Adele led Sewanee to four-straight wins to start the 2023 season. The senior averaged 5.64 digs per set, totaling 79 over 14 sets. Adele had 82 reception attempts with a .939 reception percentage and was the catalyst for the Tigers entire defensive effort.
 
Notable Performances:
  • Savannah Gann (Sewanee) – Totaled 37 kills in four matches, hit .278 on 104 swings with only eight errors
  • Yzzi Dsamou (Rhodes) – 53 kills, 19 errors out of 123 swings hitting .276 for the weekend.
  • Ainsley Schultz (Birmingham-Southern) – hit .440 with 13 kills and 90 assists. Named to Trinity National Invitational All-Tournament Team
  • Emily Goddin (Centre) – 36 kills and five aces in four matches
  • Kohler Briella (Oglethorpe) – hit .444 on 18 swings with 11 kills
  • Jazzy Innis (Berry) - posted two double-doubles, 3.08 K/S and 3.58 P/S against national competition over the weekend
  • Carys Shock (Hendrix) – hit .222 for the weekend, including .295 against North Central and .206 against No. 14 ranked Wash U with only 3 errors and one ace.
  • Maggie Mathis (Rhodes) – 52 digs out of 18 sets; 2.89 digs per set.
  • Lily Williamson (Birmingham-Southern) – totaled 30 digs, one ace, one assists and a .886 reception percentage.
  • Margaret Richardson (Millsaps) – Led the Majors in two wins at the Country Cajun Classic. Combined four 63 digs in four matches with 12 assists, three aces and two kills.
  • Sofia Cendoya (Oglethorpe) – Earned 11 digs in OU’s season opening win over LaGrange.
  • Sam Friedl (Hendrix) – Racked up 43 digs over three matches.
