SAA Baseball Report – February 12

Atlanta, Ga. – Weather across the South wreaked havoc on SAA baseball opening weekend, but four teams were able to take the diamond, posting a combined 8-1 record against nonconference competition. Millsaps and Centre both posted weekend sweeps and Sewanee won its opener. Berry faced off against Emory and won the weekend series to sit 2-1 on the season.

Athlete of the Week:
PLAYER: Bradley Pelle | Millsaps | Junior | Kenner, La. – hit .750 in two games over the weekend, going 6-for-8 at the place with three RBIs and six runs scored. In Game One, he hit 2-for-4 with a triple and a double. Pelle followed in Game Two with a 4-for-4 outing, which featured a home run, double, three RBIs, a walk, stolen base, hit by pitch and six runs scored.
 
PITCHER: Wil Wood | Millsaps | Graduate | Memphis, Tenn.  – started the season by picking up the win against LeTourneau on Friday. The left-hander threw four scoreless innings with four strikeouts while allowing three hits and three walks.
 
Notable Performances:
  • Matt Munn (Sewanee) – fanned nine batters over 4.1 innings while allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits and a walk. His effort earned a win on the hill for the Tigers.
  • Charles Stephenson (Berry) – tossed five innings and allowed one run on only two hits with a strikeout and no walks against Emory.
  • Jake Rode (Sewanee) - hit the first two-run home run of the season in a win over Tocca Falls. He got on base all four of his at-bats off three hits and a hit-by-pitch. He tallied two runs scored and had two RBIs.
  • Alex Knapp (Berry) – went 4-for-10 at the plate in three games, scoring three runs collecting an RBI on a solo homer. He was the spark for the Vikings in their series win over Emory.
