SAA Men’s Tennis Report – February 18, 2025

CANTON, Ga.  – The SAA men’s tennis season is underway with team working through nonconference play. Sewanee is ranked 15th in the latest ITA poll and sits at 3-0 on the season. Centre is 2-1 while Berry is 2-2 on the young season.

Athletes of the Week:
SINGLES
Christian Mainella | Rhodes | Junior | Toronto, Canada -  went 3-0 at the No.2 singles position in Virginia. He defeated No. 29 Christopher Newport's Ashton Legum 6-3, 6-2, and Virginia Wesleyan's Rafael Zarraga 6-2, 6-2 to help secure a 4-3 team win. Mainella also beat Shenandoah's Artem Babaiev 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in a close 3-4 team loss. 
 
DOUBLES:

Paired up to win at No. 1 doubles against Southwestern. Their 6-3 win propelled the Tigers to a 5-2 team victory over the future SAA rival Pirates.  The duo is entering the year ranked eighth in the nation. 
 
Notable Performances:
Quinn Wicklund (Sewanee) - saved three match points down 3-5 in the second set to start his comeback on the way to his 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 victory against Southwestern.
Dylan Dethridge (Centre) - remains a perfect 3-0 to start his collegiate career. Dethridge impressed in a 6-2, 6-3 drubbing of Andres Caceres in the no. 5 slot versus Asbury. Dethridge moved to no. 4 seeding in the Campbellsville match and toppled Juan Ochoa in a 0-6, 7-5, 7-5 comeback win.  
Ty Bush/Ben Rueff (Centre) - Went 2-0 as the no. 1 doubles team over the weekend with bouts versus Asbury and Campbellsville. Rueff and Bush won 6-7 in no. 1 singles over Ignacio Ardiles and Franco Patino of the Eagles in just their second-ever pairing. They proved again to be a strong pairing in the match versus Campbellsville as they took down Sebastian Toledo and Nathan Boulard in the top double spot by a score of 7-6, 7-1.
