Millsaps Claims 2013 SAA Softball Title

recap provided by Millsaps sports information

The Millsaps Majors knocked off the Birmingham Southern Panthers 8-4 in a winner-take-all game to win the SAA softball tournament hosted by Centre College.

The Majors took little time to score in this one, putting up a crooked 3-spot in th second. Logan Dukes hit a single to score Savannah Havard and Casey Brown would follow with a single to score Emily Collins and Katie Birdwell.

After the Panthers tied the game in the third, the Majors responded with two of their own to re-take the lead. Side-stepping a rain delay, Caroline Thompson singled to score Dukes and Abbie Joiner scored Brown on a ground out.

The Majors would keep the pressure on, scoring a single tally in the fifth. Logan Dukes reached on a throwing error that allowed Birdwell to score. The Majors would keep adding insurance in the sixth. Thompson's steal of second forced a wild throw to bring home Casey Brown. Kaitlyn Doles doubled down the left field line to score Thompson to make it an 8-4 game.

The Majors' pitching was sensational all weekend and the title game was no exception. Katie Birdwell got the win, going the first four and two thirds. She allowed six hits and the four runs. Molly Tyner earned the save, throwing the final two and a third of shutout, one-hit softball.

The Majors run through the tournament places them at 24-20 on the year and in the conversation for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Since the SAA is a new conference, no auto-bid is awarded during a two-year probationary period.
