COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. -- The Vikings scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, as the Berry College softball team defeated Birmingham-Southern College, 4-2, to capture their second straight Southern Athletic Association tournament championship.
The win improved the Vikings to 36-6. The loss dropped the Panthers to 36-8.
BSC led 2-1 going into the sixth inning. Back-to-back hits by Kenzie Fleming and Elisabeth Federici to score Brittany Ferrell, Shakarah Boswell and Meredith Wrye then gave BC the 4-2 lead.
Kassie Howard (26-2) earned the complete-game win on the mound for BC. Howard allowed seven hits and two runs, while striking out two batters in the outing.
The Panthers had runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the seventh, but they could not regain the lead. Howard, however, retired the next three batters and Berry prevailed.
Federici led the Berry offense in the win, adding two hits and two RBI. Three other Vikings had a hit as well: Ferrell, Fleming and Ally Claytor.
"Words honestly can't explain how proud I am of this team," said Berry Head Coach Cori Thiermann. "They have stuck to the process. They work hard each day to better the team. They have shown tremendous grit and persistence, and it has paid off at the right time of the year. Today was a great day to be a Viking!"
Berry awaits seeding for the NCAA regionals.
