  • Offensive Player of the Week: Kristian Reed / Hendrix / Jr. / Conway, Ark. Reed powered Hendrix to a pair of wins last week, including a big SAA victory over Millsaps. The junior got off two shots in a midweek tilt with Belhaven where the Warriors cruised to a 4-0 win. On the road in Jackson, Reed banged in two second half goals for a 2-0 win over the Majors. Hendrix is now 5-1-2 and off to its best start since the 2012 season. 

    Defensive Player of the Week: Michael Gul / Berry / Sr. / Cumming, Ga. Playing center back for the entire 90 minutes, Gul was instrumental in the Vikings’ SAA win over Centre. Berry allowed just four shots in the game with only one being on target in a 2-0 victory. The win evened the Vikings conference record and gave them five shutouts on the season. 

    • Through the first two games of conference play, three teams are unbeaten, three teams are looking for a first win and two teams split their games. 
    • Sewanee is riding a seven-match winning streak; Hendrix is next closest with four in a row.
    • 4-0-1 in non conference play last week, outscoring teams 18-2; Rhodes nine goals against Mississippi Women’s was the most scored in a game this season.
    • Rhodes is sixth nationally with a +29 goal differential (32 goals/3 goals allowed).
    • Sewanee is third in the nation with a 0.923 save percentage and shutout percentage (0.800); Rhodes is fourth with a 0.921 save percentage and fifth in shutout percentage (0.700). 
    • JP Furman (Sewanee) and Mitchell Fenton (Rhodes) are tied for second in Division III with seven shutouts
    • BSC’s Coleman Jennings is 11th in the nation with one goal a game; teammate Pirmin Blattmann is third in the nation with 0.89 assists per game and third with eight total assists. 
    • Jennings 2.33 points per game is ninth best in the nation. 
    • In the polls: Sewanee received votes in the national poll for the second straight week; in the region, Sewanee is No. 4, Berry No. 6 and Rhodes No. 8. 
  • Offensive Player of the Week:  Camy McKenzie / Hendrix / So. / Conway, Ark. McKenzie led Hendrix to a pair of wins last week, scoring two goals and adding an assist for five points. She tallied the game winner against Belhaven, driving in a PK in the 63rd minute. She also assisted on the game’s second goal in the first half. In an SAA match at Millsaps, she broke a scoreless tie in the 82nd minute to keep the Warriors unbeaten in conference play. 

    Defensive Player of the Week: Sophia Coon / Berry / Jr. / Benton Harbor, Mich. Behind a defense anchored by Coon, Berry tallied a big upset, beating 20th-ranked Centre 2-1 on Friday. She and the back line allowed the Colonels one goal, two under their season average, and held an offense averaging 22 shots a game to 16 with just six on goal. Coon also scored the first goal of the game, breaking a scoreless tie in the 67th minute. 

    • SAA teams went 3-1 in non conference matches, outscoring opponents 10-3. 
    • Through the first two games of conference play, three teams are unbeaten, three teams are looking for a first win and two teams split their games. 
    • Hendrix has a conference-best four match winning streak, Rhodes and Berry have each won their last two. 
    • Berry upset Centre 2-1, the Colonels first regular season loss since 2014, a span of 2903 days. It was just their fifth loss in the 11 year history of the SAA. 
    • Rhodes ranks seventh in Division III with a 0.286 goals against average; 14 goals/2 goals allowed. 
    • Centre leads the SAA with 31 goals, 26th most in the nation. 
    • Hendrix is 15th in the nation, saving 90 percent of shots on goal. 
    • Rhodes Olivia Barfield ranks 15th nationally with a 0.286 goals against average; she and Hendrix Elisabeth Caton Nelson are tied for 15th with five shutouts. 
    • Mills Mullen (Centre) is 14th nationally with six assists. 
    • In the polls: Centre received votes in the national poll and is ranked No. 5 in the region; Rhodes received region votes. 
  • Offensive Player of the Week:  Michael McGhee / Sewanee / Sr. / Chattanooga, Tenn. McGhee was nearly unstoppable on the ground for Sewanee as the Tigers narrowly dropped their SAA opener to Millsaps. The senior ran for a career-best 241 yards and a touchdown, ripping off two runs over 70 yards. His 75-yard run on the Tigers second play from scrimmage led to a touchdown and 70-yard burst in the third led to another Sewanee score. His touchdown run was a 47-yard scamper in the fourth that made it a 10-point game. 

    Defensive Player of the Week: Armon Wells / Centre / Sr. / Louisville, Ky. A pick-six to seal a victory over Rhodes capped Wells big game for Centre. The senior totaled seven tackles, to go along with two sacks and two forced fumbles. His strip sack in the first led to a scoop and score that put the Colonels ahead 14-0. With Centre holding onto a 14-7 advantage and Rhodes driving late in the fourth, he picked off a Lynx pass and raced 20-yards for the Colonel’s second defensive TD of the game.  

    Special Teams Player of the Week: Wiley Henshaw / Rhodes / Sr. / Gurley, Ala. Henshaw was perfect in PATs and stellar in the punting game in Rhodes close loss to Centre. The senior averaged 45.3 yards over his six punts, including a 59-yard boomer that pinned the Colonels back deep in their own end early in the crucial fourth quarter. For the game, he put Centre inside their own 20 five times. 

    • Road teams won three of the four SAA games last week; BSC over Berry was the only team to successfully defend home turf. Trinity (3-0) and Centre (1-0) are the only two schools unbeaten at home; Trinity (1-0) and Millsaps (2-0) are perfect on the road. 
    • Trinity is one of 29 teams undefeated on the season. The Tigers are 28th nationally in scoring offense (39.0 ppg) and 15th in scoring defense, allowing just 11 points a game. Trinity has the nation’s third best rushing defense, surrendering 30 yards on the ground per game.
    • Sewanee is third in the nation in passing defense, allowing 85.8 yards a game through the air; Rhodes is fifth at 90.8 yards a game.  
    • Millsaps is one of 20 teams in the nation yet to lose a fumble. 
    • Tucker Horn (Trinity) is seventh in the nation in completion percentage, hitting 73 percent of his passes.
    • Michael McGhee (Sewanee) is seventh in the nation with eight yards per carry, 13th in total rushing hards (525) and sixth in yards per game (131.2). 
    • Zach Ford (BSC) and Cam Tegge (Centre) are both perfect on the year in field goals. 
    • BJ Steward (Trinity) ranks seventh in the nation in punt returns, averaging 19.3 yards per return.  
    • In the polls: Trinity remained No. 5 in the D3football.com poll; BSC received one vote...Trinity is No. 6 in the AFCA Coaches Poll; BSC has three votes
  • Offensive Player of the Week:  RC Kugler / Rhodes / So. / Woodstown, N.J. Kugler led the Lynx to a pair of wins last week, totaling five points. Against Division II Maryville, she assisted on the lone goal of the game, a score late in the third quarter. In SAA play against Transylvania, she tallied the game’s first and second goals, sparking an offensive explosion in Rhodes 6-0 victory. The sophomore got off 11 shots in the game, including seven on goal.

    Defensive Player of the Week: Erin Bozdech / Centre / Sr. / St. Louis, Mo. Bozdech led a stout Colonels defense that posted a pair of shutouts in three games last week. She played a total of 163 minutes and started the week by anchoring a defense that held Transylvania to just three shots, one on goal. Two days later at Earlham, Centre allowed two shots en route to a second-straight shutout. Bozdech also led an effort that stifled Denison’s high-powered offense, surrendering seven shots and one goal to close the week.  

    • SAA teams went 2-3 in non conference play last week. Rhodes over Transy and Concordia beating Sewanee were the lone in-conference match-ups. 
    • Rhodes (6-1) has the 13th best record in the nation. 
    • Sewanee ranks 18th in the nation in saves per game with 10.67 stops per contest. 
    • Rhodes is 39th with three goals a game and 14th with 2.43 assists per night. 
    • Annalyssia Abela (Concordia) and Grae Smilek (Transy) are 23rd in the nation each with three defensive saves on the season. 
    • Riley Marzola (Rhodes) is 15th nationally with a 0.87 goals against average.
    • Centre’s Marlie McKendry is 15th in save percentage (0.825); Brenna Abrahamson of Marian is 17th (0.820).
    • Claire Damare of Sewanee is 15th in the country with 10.67 saves a game. 
    • Allyson Nichols of Marian is 15th in Division III with 1.17 goals per game.
    • No SAA teams appeared in the NFHCA national poll. 
  • Offensive Player of the Week:  Laurel Burkhardt / Sewanee / Jr. / Hoover, Ala. Burkhardt posted two standout matches for the Tigers over the weekend, facing Millsaps and 25th-ranked Birmingham-Southern. In two matches, she totaled 25 kills with a .344 attack percentage. She added 26 digs and assisted on five blocks for 28.5 points. Burkhardt didn’t have error against Millsaps, recording nine kills on 27 swings for a .333 percentage to go along with 18 digs. She posted 16 kills and a  .351 attack percentage against BSC. 

    Defensive Player of the Week: Peyton Nance / Hendrix / Sr. / Deer Park, Texas Nance had a stellar weekend as Hendrix split SAA matches with No. 7 Berry and Oglethorpe. The senior totaled 57 digs over eight sets, averaging seven digs per set overall. She posted 7.25 digs per set against Berry and seven in a four-set win over Oglethorpe. Nance also totaled two service aces and had one kill on the weekend. 

    • Road teams won five of the eight SAA matches last week; BSC was the only home team to go 2-0. 
    • Berry pushed its winning streak to 11; the Vikings are 6-0 at home and 4-1 in true road matches. 
    • BSC is undefeated (6-0) at home while Centre is 7-1 in Danville this season. 
    • Centre is 14th in the nation in kills (835) and 24th in assists (744); and 18th in total attacks (2,510); the Colonels are 30th nationally with 1,229 digs. 
    • Berry is hitting 0.258 to rank fourth in Division III. 
    • Berry is 10th in the nation, holding opponents to 0.078 hitting percentage; the Vikings are ninth with 2.33 blocks per set. 
    • Hendrix has 13.37 kills per set, the ninth best mark in Division III. 
    • Camryn Presley of Hendrix is 12th in the nation with 4.27 kills per set and 10th with 5.05 points per set. Kyler Greenlee (Hendrix) is fourth in the nation with 10.57 assists per set. 
    • Madi Barron (Centre) is 15th nationally with 335 total digs. 
    • In the polls: Berry moved up a spot to No. 5 in the latest AVCA National Ranking. BSC is No. 25. 
  • Men’s Runner of the Week Bradshaw Lathbury / Berry / Sr. / Woodstock, Ga. Traveling to Geneseo, New York for the Mike Woods Invitational, Lathbury posted a solid time and place in a loaded field. The senior finished ninth among 365 runners, recording a time of 25:16 over the 8k course. He led the Vikings to a ninth-place team finish in the field of 24 schools.  

    Women’s Runner of the Week Erin Haugh / Centre / So. / Louisville, Ky. Running on the 2022 national championship course in Michigan, Haugh posted a time of 23:56 and finished 91st of 316 runners that included some of the top in all of Division III. Her time was just a few seconds off her career best set at last year’s Great Lakes Regional. Centre finished 16th as a team with 36 schools competing at the event.

    • Huntington Invitational; BSC women were led by Gabe Earhart who took 15th in a time of 28:53...Men finished 2nd of 5 teams, Noah Arrington was the top finisher in seventh (27:35). 
    • Live in Lou Classic: Sewanee women finished 14th, led by Charlotte Ganter in 61st (20:21)...The Tigers men were led by Alexander Coley in 233rd (28:42) to finish 43rd as a team. 
    • Live in Lou Classic: Oglethorpe women finished 32nd, paced by a 107th place finish by Riley Michaud (20:50). The OU men took 29th; Ashton Deriso posted a time of 25:25 to finish 68th. Oglethorpe also sent a squad to the Ascis Invitational where they took 10th; Logan Conton was 72nd (28:27). 
    • Live in Lou Classic: Rhodes women finished 19th, led by a 13th place finish from Kate Freyaldenhoven (19:13)...Owen Foster paced the men’s team with a 53rd place finish in 26:33. The Lynx took 34th as a team. 
    • NCAA Division III Nationals Preview; Centre men took 22nd and were led by Reeve VanDemark with a time of 26:28...the womens team finished 16th and was led by Sophie Bouldin in 21st place with a time of 22:40. 
    • Men’s Teams in the rankings; Centre is No. 10 in the Great Lakes Region while in the South, Berry is No. 5, Oglethorpe No. 7 and Rhodes No. 9
    • Women’s Teams in the rankings: Centre is No,. 7 in the Great Lakes Region while Rhodes is No. 8 in the South.

Men’s Swimmer of the Week
Bryan Sullivan / Millsaps / Grad / Jackson, Miss. Sullivan started the 2022-23 season with strong swims in two meets. Against Delta State and Alabama, he finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (21.04) and fifth 100-yard butterfly (51.41). At Rhodes, he won the 50-meter freestyle (24.16) and helped the Majors finish second in the 200-meter free relay (1:44.51).

Women’s Swimmer of the Week
Cece Werth / Hendrix / Fr. / Baton Rouge, La. Werth started her first collegiate action strong with two wins and two runner-up finishes against Division II competition. Against Ouachita Baptist, she won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.27 and took first in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:23.09. In the pool with Henderson State, Werth was second in the 100-yard freestyle (10:59.25) and 200-yard butterfly (2:22.90).  

  • MEN’S GOLF
    Stateline Shootout - Miami Whitewater Forest - Harrison, Ohio
    3. Centre (+46)
    Jiles Wyatt tied for second with rounds of 78-73 to lead Centre. He was three shots off of medialist honors. Joshua Peters was 12 over (76-78) in a tie for ninth.

    2. Hendrix (+25), 3. Millsaps (+33)
    Caden Garner of Hendrix shot a 74 to take medalist honors. Millsaps was led by Andrew Lovjoy in a tie for sixth with a score of 79. 

    In the rankings:  The first Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches poll was released Sept. 9. Sewanee sits No. 8 to top the SAA while Oglethorpe is ranked No. 14 and Berry checked in at No. 18. Rhodes received votes. 


    WOMEN’S GOLF
    Rhodes Classic - Mirimichi Golf Club - Millington, Tenn.
    1. Rhodes (+29), 6. BSC (+148), 7. Millsaps (+169)
    Grace Young led Rhodes in a third place finish, shooting rounds of 68-82-72 (+6). Gentry Scott was shot the low score for BSC, carding 81-84-75 (+24) to tie for 15th. Annie Piggott took 12th at 21-over (84-74-79) to lead Millsaps. 

    In the rankings:  Centre checked is tied for ninth in the first Muzuno/ WGCA Coaches poll of the season. Rhodes checked in at No. 17  while Oglethorpe, Sewanee and Berry all received votes.

  • MEN’S SWIMMING
    Piedmont 181, Sewanee 77

    • George Mabry won the 50-yard backstroke (25.43), 100-yard butterfly (54.35) and 100-yard backstroke (56.92). 
    • Daniel Shrader recorded a 1:57.39 in the 200 freestyle to earn gold. The senior also picked up a second place finish of 23.20 seconds in the 50 free and 25.55 seconds in the 50 fly for third. 

    WOMEN’S SWIMMING
    Sewanee 166, Piedmont 96

    • Mary-Louise LeMieux won three events on Saturday. The sophomore won gold in the 1,000 freestyle (11:24.73), 100 freestyle (56.01) and the 100 individual medley (1:06.02). 
    • Aurelia Willett captured two wins in the 50 back (29.91) and the 500 freestyle (5:40.95). Additionally, she finished second behind teammate LeMieux in the 100 IM (1:06.53). 
    • Maddy DuBois took care of two events on Saturday, winning both the 50 fly (28.27) and the 100 fly (1:04.26).
    • Sarah Mehany (2:10.18) was the winner in the 200 free.
    • Newcomer Natalia Evans won and Audrey Francell collected victories in their first collegiate meet. Evans won the 100 backstroke (1:06.65, while Francell was the top swimmer in the 50 free (25.77).
    • The quartet of Francell, Dottie Ferreira, Riley Carswell and LeMieux breezed past the competition in the 200 free relay. With a winning time of 1:47.58, the relay team finished almost five seconds ahead of Piedmont’s top relay squad.
    • In the 200 medley relay, Willett, Mehany, DuBois and Francell posted an under two-minute finish to win the event (1:58.24).
