  • Offensive Player of the Week: Tyler Cozzie / Sewanee / So. / Raleigh, N.C. Cozzie continued his hot streak and led the Tigers to a pair of wins last week. He scored the game winner and had a pair of shots on goal in Sewanee’s 5-0 romp over Huntingdon. Hosting Berry in the first SAA match of the season, Cozzie again tallied the game winner and assisted on the game’s second goal in a 3-0 win over the Vikings. 

    Defensive Player of the Week: Zack Roberts / Hendrix / Sr. / Houston, Texas Hendrix posted a shutout of Birmingham-Southern in the SAA opener, riding a defense led by Roberts. He was instrumental in keeping the nation’s No. 4 scoring offense to just one goal and five shots on frame; the Panther’s lowest scoring output of the season. Roberts also assisted on the Warriors first goal of the game. 

    • Round one of SAA play began last weekend with home teams going 3-1 and outscoring their visitors 11-3. 
    • Oglethorpe is now unbeaten in its last eight conference matches dating back to last season. 
    • Excluding the abbreviated Spring 2021 COVID season, Berry’s men’s soccer program can finish an unbeaten non-conference season if it beats Huntingdon Oct. 4 for the first time in the school’s D-III era.
    • Sewanee is on a four-game winning streak; its only loss was 1-0 to No. 13 Washington & Lee on Sept. 10.
    • BSC is eighth in the nation in scoring offense (3.57 goal/gm), third in both assists per game (3.3) and points per game (10.4). Primin Blattmann tops Division III with 1.14 assists per game; Coleman Jennings is fifth with 1.3 goals per game and fourth with three points a game. 
    • Sewanee has allowed one goal in seven match to rank among the nation’s leaders in defense; the Tigers are third in save percentage (0.95) and goals against average (0.14). JP Furman is fourth nationally with a 0.15 goals against average. 
    • Rhodes is 11th nationally with a 0.4 goals against average. The Lynx have allowed three goals in seven matches. Michael Fenton is tied with Furman for third in the nation with five shutouts. 
    • Tyler Cozzie (Sewanee) has three game winning goals; fifth most in the nation. 
  • Offensive Player of the Week:  Mills Mullen / Centre / Sr. / Charleston, W. Va. Mullen amassed 10 points in a busy, three-game week for the Colonels. She tallied two assists in a 3-1 win at Bob Jones. Opening SAA play hosting Oglethorpe, Mullen scored the second goal of the game and assisted on the third as Centre posted a 3-0 conference win. The next day, she went off for two goals, including the game winner, and added an assist during a 4-0 win over Wittenberg. 

    Defensive Player of the Week:  Julia Massa / Berry / Fr. / Los Gatos, Calif. For the second-straight week, Massa earned SAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. The goalkeeper posted a shutout over Sewanee in the conference opener. She played all 90 minutes and tallied a pair of saves, both in the second half, to preserve a 1-0 Vikings victory. 

    • Home teams posted a 3-1 record and outscored visitors 7-1 over the first round of SAA in-conference play. Rhodes, Hendrix and Centre posted home shutouts while Berry won 1-0 on the road. 
    • Centre has won its last 41-straight SAA matches. Sewanee on Sept. 26, 2016 was its last tie and Rhodes on October 19, 2015 was the Colonels last conference loss. 
    • Rhodes has allowed just two goals through six games; ranking 12th nationally in goals against average (0.33). Hendrix is 16th (0.38) in goals against average and ninth in save percentage. 
    • Centre’s 26 goals is the 27th most in Division III. 
    • Alexis Kronenthal (Centre) is sixth in the nation with three game winning goals. Teammate Mills Mullen is 19th in the country with 0.67 assists per game and seventh with six total assists. 
    • Elisabeth Caton Nelson (Hendrix) and Olivia Barfield (Rhodes) are tied for the 17th best goals against average (0.33); Caton Nelson is 10th in the nation with a 0.946 save percentage. 
    • In the polls; Centre remained 20th in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III poll. Regionally, the Colonels are second with Rhodes checking in at No. 8. 
  • Offensive Player of the Week:  Luke Macias / Rhodes / Sr. / Fort Worth, Texas Macias threw for 216 yards and a touchdown in leading Rhodes to a 56-6 win over Westminster. He hit on 14 of 17 passes, including a 26-yard TD throw in the third quarter to put the Lynx ahead 49-0. On the ground, Macias totaled three carries for 33 yards, including a 24-yard scramble.  

    Defensive Player of the Week: Garrett Smith / Birmingham-Southern / Sr. / Mobile, Ala. Smith was all over the field for BSC in a 34-14 win over Point University. The senior defensive lineman totaled five tackles, including one for loss. In the fourth, he blew through the Westminster offensive line and recorded a strip sack to force a Point punt. Smith also filled the stat sheet with a pass breakup.  

    Special Teams Player of the Week: Zach Ford / Birmingham-Southern / Sr. / Calera, Ala. Ford was perfect on all six kicking attempts in the Panthers win over Point University. He was 2-for-2 in field goals, including a 22-yarder and career-long 42-yard bomb in the third quarter, to give BSC a 13-point lead. Ford also hit all four PAT attempts. 

    • Just three teams played last week with Rhodes and Birmingham-Southern getting wins to close the non conference season. 
    • Excluding the 2021 spring season, Trinity has won 19-straight regular season games. The Tigers are one of just 39 unbeaten teams remaining in Division III. 
    • Millsaps is one of 34 teams in the nation yet to lose a fumble. 
    • Trinity boasts one of the nation’s top overall offenses; ranking 27th in scoring offense at 41.3 points a game, 30th in passing offense with nearly 300 yards a game and sixth in completion percentage.  On the other side of the ball, Trinity has the nation’s fourth-best rushing defense and 32nd scoring defense at 12.3 points a game. They also lead the nation in kick-off returns at 42.50 yards a game. 
    • BJ Stewart (Trinity) is 12th in the nation with 173 all purpose yards a game; leading the nation in kickoff return yardage. Teammate Tucker Horn is 12th in the nation, hitting 70 percent of his passes. 
    • Jon Lewis (BSC) is seventh in the nation with 131 rushing yards a game. 
    • Jack Colosimo of Centre is averaging one INT a game, the fourth best mark in the country. 
    • In the polls; Trinity ranks No. 5 in the D3football.com poll and No. 6 in the AFCA Coaches Poll. Berry received votes in both rankings. 
  • Offensive Player of the Week:  Allyson Nichols / Marian / Fr. / Little Falls, N.Y. With a hat trick in Marian’s first SAA game, a win over Concordia, Nichols earned offensive player of the week honors for the second time this season. After Concordia tied the score in the third, Nichols scored the eventual game winner on a breakaway on the right side of the box.  She added a penalty stroke goal five minutes later and completed the hat trick with a goal late in the fourth. 

    Defensive Player of the Week:  Carlie McKenry / Centre / So. / Wilmington, Del. McKenry was spectacular in goal as Centre nearly pulled off an upset of 18th-ranked Lynchburg, falling 1-0. The sophomore was tested the entire game, racking up 10 saves over the full 60 minutes. Lynchburg scored early in the third, but it proved to be the game’s only goal as McKenry went on stop four more shots the rest of the way. 

    • SAA teams went 2-5 in non confernece play, facing some of the nation’s top teams. 
    • Marian completed the season sweep of Concordia in the only SAA match-up of the week. 
    • At 2-0 in SAA play this year, Centre has won 20-straight conference games. 
    • Sewanee and Concordia both rank 14th in the nation with 11 saves per game; Centre is 13th in save percentage at 84 percent. 
    • Allyson Nichols (Marian) is fourth in the nation in scoring with 1.5 goals a game and ranks seventh with 3.25 points per contest. 
    • Brenna Abrahamson (Marian) is 14th in save percentage (84 percent); Claire Damare (Sewanee) is ranked 15th in the nation with 11 saves a game. 
    • Concordia at Sewanee and Transylvania at Rhodes are the only to in-conference game scheduled for the upcoming week. Centre and Marian will each be on the road for a pair and Rhodes hosts Maryville in a midweek match-up. 
  • Offensive Player of the Week:  Camryn Presley / Hendrix / Jr. / Greenwood, Ark. Posting a hitting percentage of .309 over three matches, Presley was named SAA Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. She hit .464 with 16 kills in a 3-0 sweep over Rhodes before racking up 29 kills and hitting .304 in a close 3-2 loss to Sewanee. Presley closed the week with a 16-kill performance against Centre. For the week, she totaled 61 kills and added 36 digs and three service aces. 

    Defensive Player of the Week:  Sophia Cendoya / Oglethorpe / Jr. / Alpharetta, Ga.  Cendoya led Oglethorpe to a SAA season-opening weekend split against Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps. She amassed 17 digs in a four-set loss to BSC and came back the next day to total 13 digs in leading the Stormy Petrels to a 3-0 win over Millsaps. She also had one ace in each match and tallied eight total assists. 

    • Since consecutive losses to nationally-ranked teams to start the season, Berry has won its last nine in a row; eight by 3-0 scores. They have outscored opponents 150-77 in sweeps of Millsaps and then-No. 23 Birmingham-Southern over the weekend.
    • Berry is on a 16-match SAA winning streak dating back to last season. 
    • The Vikings rank top-10 nationally in hitting percentage (5th; 0.255), blocks per set (7th; 2.39), and opponent hitting percentage (9th; 0.079). 
    • Hendrix is fifth nationally with 12.66 assists per set and sixth with 13.66 kills per set. 
    • Camryn Presley (Hendrix) is 12th in Division III with 4.27 kills per set and 10th with five points per set. Teammate Kyler Greenlee is second in the nation with 10.76 assists per set. 
    • Leah Nielsen (BSC) ranks 17th in the country with 1.14 blocks per set. 
    • In the polls; Berry jumped three spots to No. 7 in the latest AVCA Coaches National Ranking. BSC held on to its ranking, coming in at No. 25. 
  • Men’s Runner of the Week: Patrick Elliott / Millsaps / Jr. / Covington, La. Elliott led Millsaps men’s cross country to a sixth-place finish at the 13-team Mississippi College Watson Cross Country Classic. The junior finished the 8k course in a time of 27:28 to take 37th, second among Division III runners, in a field of 121 student-athletes. 

    Women’s Runner of the Week: Sarah Strickland / Millsaps / So. / Spanish Fort, Ala. Strickland was the top Millsaps runner and led the Majors to a fifth-place finish at the 10-team Mississippi College Watson Cross Country Classic. She posted a time of 27:06 over the 6k course and was the top Division III finisher at the race.  

    • Patrick Elliott is the firs Millsaps men’s cross country runner to be named SAA Runner of the Week. 
    • Millsaps women totaled 131 points and finished fifth among 10 teams at the Mississippi College Watson Classic. Sarah Strickland took 40th and was the top Division III runner in the field of 81. She posted a 6k time of 27:06. 
    • The Majors men took sixth of 14 teams with 174 points at the Watson Classic. Elliott went 27:28 over the 8k course and was the second-fastest Division III runner. 
  • MEN’S GOLF
    Gate City Invitational - Starmount Country Club - Greensboro, N.Y.
    8. Oglethorpe (+26), 14. Berry (+41) - 17 teams
    Beck Lewis was par or better over the last two rounds and led Oglethorpe to an eighth-place finish. Lewis turned in score of 76-70-71 to finish four-over. Berry’s Sam Patterson (73-73-71) also tied for 18th as the Vikings finished 14th of the 17 teams at the event. 

    In the rankings:  The first Bushnell/Golfweek Division III Coaches poll was released Sept. 9. Sewanee sits No. 8 to top the SAA while Oglethorpe is ranked No. 14 and Berry checked in at No. 18. Rhodes received votes. 


    WOMEN’S GOLF

    Nina McMurtrey shot two rounds under par and finished third (-2) to lead Centre to a runner-up finish at the Montgomery Country Club Intercollegiate. Meaghan Grant finished even par and tied for fourth. Merrick Semans finished alone in ninth (+2) and led Sewanee to an eight-place finish. Oglethorpe was ninth, Rhodes 10th, Berry 11th and Birmingham-Southern 14th. 

    In the rankings: Centre checked is tied for ninth in the first Muzuno/ WGCA Coaches poll of the season. Rhodes checked in at No. 17  while Oglethorpe, Sewanee and Berry all received votes.

  • MEN’S SWIMMING
    Piedmont 181, Sewanee 77

    • George Mabry won the 50-yard backstroke (25.43), 100-yard butterfly (54.35) and 100-yard backstroke (56.92). 
    • Daniel Shrader recorded a 1:57.39 in the 200 freestyle to earn gold. The senior also picked up a second place finish of 23.20 seconds in the 50 free and 25.55 seconds in the 50 fly for third. 

    WOMEN’S SWIMMING
    Sewanee 166, Piedmont 96

    • Mary-Louise LeMieux won three events on Saturday. The sophomore won gold in the 1,000 freestyle (11:24.73), 100 freestyle (56.01) and the 100 individual medley (1:06.02). 
    • Aurelia Willett captured two wins in the 50 back (29.91) and the 500 freestyle (5:40.95). Additionally, she finished second behind teammate LeMieux in the 100 IM (1:06.53). 
    • Maddy DuBois took care of two events on Saturday, winning both the 50 fly (28.27) and the 100 fly (1:04.26).
    • Sarah Mehany (2:10.18) was the winner in the 200 free.
    • Newcomer Natalia Evans won and Audrey Francell collected victories in their first collegiate meet. Evans won the 100 backstroke (1:06.65, while Francell was the top swimmer in the 50 free (25.77).
    • The quartet of Francell, Dottie Ferreira, Riley Carswell and LeMieux breezed past the competition in the 200 free relay. With a winning time of 1:47.58, the relay team finished almost five seconds ahead of Piedmont’s top relay squad.
    • In the 200 medley relay, Willett, Mehany, DuBois and Francell posted an under two-minute finish to win the event (1:58.24).
