Nicholasville, Ky. (May 16, 2023) – Fresh off a record breaking Southern Athletic Conference Championship title run, ninth-ranked Oglethorpe headlines the league’s contingent at the 2023 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf National Championship.
The Stormy Petrels are joined by individuals Tanner Bronnum of Birmingham-Southern and Pearse Lucas from Sewanee.

A total of 221 players will compete May 16-19 at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The team and individual champions will be determined after 72 holes of play or the conclusion of the last fully completed round. Forty-three teams and six individuals not on one of those teams will be selected to participate in the championships. After 36 holes of competition, the field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals not on one of those teams.
SAA Coach of the Year Jim Owen will lead OU into the championship after guiding his squad to wins in each of the last two tournaments. Three players hold spots in top-50 on the GolfStat national rankings. Michael O’Sullivan leads the way at 38
th with an adjusted scoring average of 73.59. Beck Lewis is 46
th (73.51) and Tipp Murphy 50
th (73.76). Lewis was medalist at the SAA championship, shooting a 13 under with scores of 67-63-73.
The Stormy Petrels played on the course earlier in the season, placing eight of 18 teams at the NCAA Fall Preview. Sam Karman led the way, tying for fifth place at four-over after rounds of 73-73-74.
The University of the South standout Pearse Lucas was named the SAA Player of the Year and holds the 14
th spot in the latest GolfStat ranking. The sophomore has a pair of top-five finishes this season; at the Rhodes Fall Invitational and the Visit Florence Collegiate. He has a 72.95 adjusted scoring average and low round of 69 this season. Lucas finished 12
th on the championship course at the NCAA Preview in October, posting scores of 73-73-77.
Bronnum was voted the SAA Newcomer of the Year and ranks 40
th nationally with an adjusted scoring average of 72.95. He burst on the scene this season with a victory at the Royal Lakes Invitational, a top-five finish at the Chick-fil-A Collegiate and runner-up at the SAA Championship. The freshman set a new conference first round record, shooting a seven-under 65 to open the event.
The first round of the NCAA Championship is set for an 8:30 am ET shotgun start. Oglethorpe will go off on holes 1-3, Lucas on 18 and Bronnum on No. 9.
