SAA 2023 Volleyball Report – Week 2

Atlanta, Ga. – Oglethorpe and Sewanee are riding four-game winning streaks after the second week of the Southern Athletic Association season. The Tigers moved to 8-1 on the year after sweeping competition at their home tournament and the Stormy Petrels are 4-0 after three wins at the Wilmington College Invitational. Birmingham-Southern also had a perfect weekend, beating CCS teams Huntingdon and LaGrange on Saturday.

Athletes of the Week:
OFFENSIVE: Jazzy Innis | Berry | Senior | Johns Creek, Ga. | Innis led Berry in kills over the weekend that saw the Vikings face three-straight nationally ranked opponents. Her effort led to a place on the Juniata College Asics Invitational All-Tournament team. The senior paced the Berry offense in every match, highlighted by 15 kills and .286 hitting percentage in a big regional win over 25th-ranked Christopher Newport.
 
DEFENSIVE: Kate Whittle | Berry | Junior | Louisville, Ky. | Whittle had three big matches over the weekend against three nationally ranked teams. Against No. 1 Juniata, she recorded a match-high 26 digs (8.7 digs/set) to start the weekend. The next day against Carnegie Mellon (RV) she recorded 23 digs (5.75 digs/set) and later led Berry over No. 25 Christopher Newport with a match-high 27 digs (5.4 digs/set).
 
Notable Performances:
  • Claire Hayes (Birmingham-Southern) – Led BSC to a pair of wins, totaling 19 kills and .363 hitting percentage. Also added five aces to the big weekend.
  • Olivia Jones (Sewanee) – Racked up 37 kills and hit .397 over four matches to rank among the all-time best four-game stretches in school history.  Also recorded six aces and scored 49 points during the week.
  • Emily Goddin (Centre) – Led Centre with 40 kills over three matches. She had nine kills against 16th-ranked Transylvania to start the week. At the Breas Mountaineer Invitational, she hit .414 with 16 kills against Baldwin-Wallace and later hit .444 with 15 kills against Berea, both Centre victories.
  • Kate Rosenthal (Oglethorpe) – Helped the Stormy Petrels win all three matches while only dropping one set all weekend. She tallied 30 kills and hit .393, making only one error over two Saturday matches in Wilmington, Ohio.
  • Enaiya Thompson (Hendrix) – Totaled 20 kills and was voted to the ETBU Tiger Invitational All-Tournament Team. She hit .415 over the three matches, highlighted by eight kills against Dallas and a .571 percentage against Belhaven.
  • Sophie Snodgrass (Rhodes) – Enjoyed a strong weekend with 30 kills and just 10 errors on 63 attempts, hitting .322 at the Rhodes Invitational. Against Bethel, she tallied 11 kills with just two errors to hit .529 for the match.
  • Grace Waddle (Birmingham-Southern) – Played all eight sets for the Panthers, finishing the week with a .917 reception percentage, 32 digs and three aces.
  • Madi Barron (Centre) – Started the week with 23 digs against 16th-ranked Transylvania and then recorded 45 digs on a Saturday doubleheader sweep of Baldwin-Wallace and Berea. Barron’s 27 digs against B-W represented a season high.
  • Sofia Cendoya (Oglethorpe) – Tallied 56 digs, including a season high 24 against Wilmington. She also added 13 assists and six service aces.
  • Lauren Rothe (Hendrix) – Coming in off the bench, led the Warriors defense in four matches. Posted 4.21 digs per set, including 27 against Whitman.
  • Maggie Mathis (Rhodes) – Totaled 49 digs over four Rhodes weekend matches. She enjoyed a big day against Austin with 11 digs to follow up an 11 dig performance against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
