SEWANEE, Tenn. (November 10, 2024) – The University of Mary Washington captured the first Collegiate Field Hockey Conference Sunday, holding off a Rhodes fourth quarter comeback to win 6-4.
TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
Grayson Scott scored four goals to lead UMW in the title game. Emma Bernard added a goal and an assist while Mackenzie Proffitt tallied a goal. Goalie Tori Winans stopped three shots in a winning effort with Erin Roy tallying three saves.
Rhodes Catherine Gluodenis was fantastic in goal, racking up 15 saves. Grace Utz was the top offensive player for the Lynx, scoring twice and adding an assist. Maria Zaporozhski and Elinor West also scored Rhodes goals.
Utz got the Lynx on top early on a penalty stroke less than a minute into the contest. Scott quickly got the Eagles back on track with an unassisted goal a minute later and then immediately tacked on the go ahead score. Bernard assisted on that goal and then got UMW a two-goal cushion with a score of her own late in the first quarter.
Back-to-back goals by Grayson on both sides of halftime put Mary Wash up 5-1 and a Proffitt penalty made it a 6-1 score heading into the fourth.
Utz scored her second for Rhodes and was followed by goals from Zaporozhski and West, but the comeback ran out of time.
