SAA Softball Report – February 26

Atlanta, Ga. – The last weekend in February saw all seven SAA softball schools in action as nonconference play continues to ramp up. Berry is ranked No. 3 in the nation and sits at 8-0 on the year. Birmingham-Southern is on a two-game winning streak to even its record at 4-4 while Sewanee is 4-6 on the season.

Athlete of the Week:
PLAYER: Isabella Furgason | Birmingham-Southern | Senior | McCalla, Ala. – hit .667 in a pair of wins over Covenant. The senior went 4-for-6 with three RBI and a run scored. In a five-inning game one, she knocked in three runs on two hits and added another pair of base knocks in the second game of the series.
 
PITCHER: Ava Fouts | Berry | First Year | Canton, Ga. – earned a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and two walks on the afternoon. The newcomer struck out 11 of the 22 batters she faced and didn’t allow a runner past second.
 
Notable Performances:
  • Paige Bennett (Berry) – hit .600 and scored two runs, leading Berry to a pair of convincing wins. She was 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs. In the weekend finale, she went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a double.
  • Lydia Rice (Centre) – blasted a pinch-hit, three-run homer that ended up scoring the winning runs in a 5-3 triumph over Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday. 
  • Maggie Barker (Sewanee) - was 8-for-12 at the plate with a .667 batting average. She recorded four doubles and a pair of RBIs.
  • Olivia Trout (Birmingham-Southern) – recorded her first win of the season with a one-hit shutout over five innings. She fanned five and walked three in the game.
  • Andrea Searcy (Centre) – threw 6.1 innings over two games, allowing just six hits and striking out 11. She fanned nine in four innings against Franklin on Sunday.
