SAA Volleyball Report – Sept. 16, 2024

CANTON, Ga.  -  The first conference matches of the season were contested last weekend with Centre and Berry winning to sit tied atop the SAA standings. The Colonels entered the week ranked No. 20 in the nation and went 2-1 with the loss coming against No. 25 Transylvania. They beat Sewanee 3-0 to open the conference slate. Berry shook off its tough start and downed Oglethorpe 3-0 in its SAA lid lifter. Millsaps remains one of the hottest teams in the nation, pushing its winning streak to 11 in a row and sitting at 11-1 on the season.

Athletes of the Week:
OFFENSIVE: Bella Boston | Berry | Senior | Newman, Ga. - paced the Vikings offense, recording an SAA-high .414 hitting percentage on the weekend. The weekend was highlighted by her .529 performance against No. 23 Transylvania and a conference opening win over Oglethorpe. In the three matches she played, Bella recorded 3.4 kills/set and added 10 blocks to her point line. For her efforts she was named to the All-Tournament team.
 
DEFENSIVE: Mary Addisyn Stubbs | Hendrix | Sophomore | Collierville, Tenn. – produced a very solid weekend for the Warriors, who went 2-2 during a swing through Texas. The sophomore averaged 5.05 digs per set and had just four reception errors on 70 attempts. She as big in a five-set win against St. Thomas, racking up 31 digs. She also had nine aces, five of which came in one match against Southwestern.
 
Notable Performances:
  • Syd Bietz (Centre) - recorded 37 kills across three matches this week to pace the Centre volleyball team. On a Saturday doubleheader against Sewanee and Berea, Bietz hit .429 in both matches, finishing with a dozen kills against the Tigers and 14 more against the Mountaineers as the Colonels completed the weekend sweep.
  • Riley Brady (Hendrix) - was a force all weekend. She always found a way to score and lead the court, earning nine aces. She had 22 digs and had to serve receive with 19 reception attempts and only two errors as a middle blocker.
  • Ally Baer (Millsaps) – led the Majors offense to a perfect 5-0 week and ran their winning streak to 11 in a row. She hit .408 and racked up a week-high 17 kills in four sets against McMurry. The junior also added 10 service aces.
  • Yzzi Dsamou (Rhodes) - led the Rhodes offense with two double digit matches (19,16) with the highest hitting percentage of .583 on Saturday with 16 kills two errors and 24 swings.  She continues to be a strong arm with a total of 49 kills hitting .217 for the weekend.
  • Lilly Teagle (Berry) - had a great defensive weekend, recording 11 blocks (1.1 b/s) in the three matches she played. Teagle is currently leading the SAA with 1.33 blocks/set. 
  • June Padilla (Centre) - led the Colonels in digs in all three of Centre's games this week, averaging four per set. She matched a season high with 16 digs against Transylvania on Wednesday, and then followed that up with a new season high of 18 in a win against Berea on Saturday.
  • Olivia Wiseman (Rhodes) – produced another strong weekend, posting a total of 63 digs in four matches. She had a breakout performance with 27 digs against Trine University and added eight total aces on the week.
  • Sandy Bourgeois (Millsaps) – led the Millsaps defense in five wins, three of which were sweeps. She averaged 4.5 digs per set, posting double digits in each match. The sophomore had 20 in wins over Huntingdon and Austin.
