SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity University Women's Soccer team saw its NCAA Tournament run end in heartbreaking fashion, falling 2-1 in overtime to Cal Lutheran in the second round on Sunday afternoon at Paul McGinlay Field.
The Tigers (14-2-4) entered the match unbeaten in their last seven outings and looked every bit the aggressor early, backed by a lively home crowd. Trinity struck first in the 23rd minute through standout forward
Hanna Khan (Southlake, Texas / Carroll), who continued her superb end-of-season form with her fifth goal in four games. After a flowing build-up through midfield,
Alex Doran (Boerne, Texas / Geneva School of Boerne) slipped a clever ball into space for
Lila Brackin (Dallas, Texas / Lake Highlands), who squared it across the top of the box. Khan met it in stride, took one touch inside and blasted a finish into the top left-hand corner, that smashed down off the crossbar and into the goal to give the Tigers a deserved 1-0 lead.
Trinity continued to apply pressure, with Khan and
Bri Werner (Woodbine, Maryland / Glenelg) both forcing strong saves, but Cal Lutheran managed to pull level moments before the halftime whistle. Against the run of play in the 43rd minute, the Regals converted a scramble in the box to tie the match 1-1 heading into the break.
The second half saw both sides trade extended spells of momentum. Trinity's back line, anchored by
Ilsa Newland (St. Louis, Missouri / Kirkwood) and
Kylie Harris (Missouri City, Texas / Ridgepoint), absorbed some pressure early in the second half, while goalkeeper
Lauren Little (Houston, Texas / Episcopal) delivered a composed performance with three crucial saves. Trinity nearly grabbed a late winner as the Tigers surged forward in the final moments of regulation. Brackin forced a team save in the 90th minute, and Werner rattled the woodwork seconds later, inches away from delivering a dramatic winner.
But two minutes into overtime, Cal Lutheran produced one moment of magic as Keira Hazard scored an Olimpico from a corner to end the contest at 2-1.
Though the result was one of fine margins and initially stings, Trinity's performance embodied the resilient, flowing, attack-minded identity that carried the Tigers to another postseason berth. With a young core and standout contributions across the roster, the Tigers exit the NCAA Tournament with pride and a bright future ahead.
