Women's tennis sweeps Southwestern, advances at SAA Championships

MEMPHIS – Ivy Wilson and Emma Foster each earned straight-set victories to clinch the match as Sewanee's women's tennis team defeated Southwestern, 5-0, in the SAA Semifinals on Saturday afternoon.

Sewanee took an early lead by claiming the doubles point. Mariella Congeni and Wilson opened with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, and after Southwestern evened the score at No. 3, Foster and Lucy Lee secured the point with a 7-5 victory at No. 2 doubles.

The Tigers extended their advantage to 2-0 to begin singles play following a withdrawal from the Pirates at No. 6.

Congeni pushed Sewanee to the brink of victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. Wilson and Foster then finished simultaneously to seal the match, with Wilson earning a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 3 and Foster adding a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5.

At No. 2, High claimed the first set, 6-2, and was tied 4-4 in the second when the match was clinched. Lee battled to a 7-6 (5) first-set win at No. 4 and led in the second set when play was halted.

Sewanee advances to face Trinity in the SAA Championship match on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tenn.
