NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (April 27, 2025) – For the 11
th time in conference history, the Sewanee women’s tennis team captured the SAA championship, beating Berry 4-0 Sunday morning in North Little Rock.
Other than two Covid-altered seasons, Sewanee has won every SAA women’s tennis tournament. The 2020 championship was canceled, and the Tigers did not compete in 2021. They are 31-0 all-time in the conference tourney and finished another year without dropping a conference match, sitting at 102-0 all-time in SAA play.
Sunday’s match with Berry was a near carbon copy of the Tigers previous championship appearances. They took the doubles point with a pair of quick sweeps. Mariella Congeni and Sara Livingston beat Sakura Manning and Lacey Craig 6-0 in the No. 3 match while Ansley Carpenter and Brooke Despriet won the No. 1 match over Lauren Masteller and Sara Mejia by the same score.
Congeni got things going for the Tigers in singles play, winning the No. 3 match over Sophie Gibbs 6-0, 6-0. Despriet beat Olivia Walton 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 4 match and Livingston clinched the championship with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Mejia at No. 2.
The win gives Sewanee the SAA’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
