SAA 2023 Volleyball Report - Week 4

Atlanta, Ga. – The Southern Athletic Association schedule is underway with Berry and Birmingham-Southern sitting atop the standings, both at 3-0. The 13th-ranked Vikings have won seven-straight while BSC has won its last three. The two schools will meet in Mount Berry his coming Saturday.
 
The Vikings are hitting .258 in SAA matches while BSC his holding league opponents to a 0.32 hitting percentage to top the conference.
 
Abby Swartz of Centre is hitting .441 in conference play while BSC’s Kylie Wilhelmi leads the SAA with 4.1 kills per set. Ainsley Schultz of Birmingham-Southern averages 9.9 assists per set while Berry’s Lindsey Macdiarmid averages 9.7 per set.
 
Margaret Richardson of Millsaps tops the league with 5.4 digs per set and Rhodes Rachel Clarke leads the league with 13 total blocks.

Athletes of the Week:
OFFENSIVE: Jacqueline Weller | Sewanee | First-year | Acworth, Ga. – Weller totaled 17 kills and hit .244 in a five set match against Oglethorpe.  She added three service aces and scored 21 points for the contest.  Against Berry, she hit .222 and added three more aces for the weekend, scoring 12 points in a three-set match.  Her overall performance of 24 kills, eight errors, on 67 swings gave her a .235 hitting percentage for the weekend.
 
DEFENSIVE: Abby Dunford | Birmingham-Southern | Senior | Huntsville, Ala. – Dunford appeared in all three Birmingham-Southern wins over the weekend and kept the Panthers tied for the SAA lead. The senior totaled 40 digs in the three matches, collecting 12 in three-set win over Rhodes and 19 in a five-set victories over Hendrix. Dunford also added nine aces.
 
Notable Performances:
  • Lindsey MacDiarmid (Berry) – The junior setter led the Berry offense to an SAA-high .261 team hitting percentage on the week that saw six different Viking hitters hit .300 or higher. MacDiarmid was also an offensive threat, adding nine kills and six aces.
  • Kylie Wilhelmi (Birmingham-Southern) – Led BSC to three SAA victories, hitting .190 for the week and averaging 4.1 kills per set. Hit .286 against Millsaps and later racked up 23 kills against Hendrix.
  • Camryn Presley (Hendrix) – The attacking leader for the Warriors over two matches, earning 2.43 points and 1.87 kills par set. She added two aces and was only hit with two reception errors on 64 attempts.
  • Yzzi Dsamou (Rhodes) – Posted a strong weekend for the Lynx, hitting .294 against Birmingham-Southern and .290 against Millsaps. She totaled 20 kills with just six errors from 48 swings.
  • Sophia Caruso (Sewanee) – Filled in as libero in a five-set match against Oglethorpe, racking up 24 digs (4.8 per set). Against Berry the following day, she tallied 10 digs in three sets.
  • Bella Boston (Berry) – Recorded 0.9 blocks per set, highlighted by a five-blocks performance against Sewanee. She also recorded 2.1 digs per set to bolster the Berry defense. In addition, she hit .310 with 3.5 kills per set, including 16 kills against Centre.
  • Sam Friedl (Hendrix) – Led the Warriors in digs, averaging 4.12 per set.
  • Rachel Clarke (Rhodes) – Earned six blocks against Millsaps and two more against Birmingham-Southern that started her big week. Leads the SAA with 13 blocks in league play.
  • Margaret Richardson (Millsaps) – Paced the Majors defense with 54 digs over three matches, averaging 5.4 per set.
  • Madi Barron (Centre) – Led the Colonels to an advantage in digs in both SAA matches. She led all players with 23 digs in a win over Oglethorpe and followed with 11 against 13th-rankd Berry.
