SAA 2023 Football Report – Week 9

Atlanta, Ga. – Each of the SAA’s four games were decided by at least 25 points as teams continued to jockey for position in the conference standings with two weeks left in the season.
 
Sixth-ranked Trinity (7-1) took another step towards a third-straight conference championship, blanking Millsaps 63-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers are 6-0 in league play and will travel to Sewanee this week for a chance to wrap up the NCAA automatic qualifier and at least a share of the SAA crown.
 
Berry (7-1) is second in the conference standings at 5-1 and coming off a 53-6 home win over Hendrix. The Vikings have now won four in a row and moved up to No. 23 in the D3football.com national poll. Centre picked up a third-straight win after a 54-22 win over Sewanee while Rhodes defended home turf against Birmingham-Southern, 34-8.

Athletes of the Week:
OFFENSIVE: Brandon Cade | Berry | Junior | Duluth, Ga. – Was nearly unstoppable in just two quarter for Berry, rushing for 200 yards and four touchdowns on eight carries. The junior had a four-yard touchdown run earlier in the first quarter to put the Vikings on top 8-0. He then went off in the second quarter with touchdown runs of 58-yards, 65-yards, and nine-yards to blow the game wide open.  
 
DEFENSIVE: Brock Skinner | Berry | Fifth-year | Hoschton, Ga.  – Anchored a Berry defense that limited Hendrix to just six points. The fifth-year snagged two interceptions for a total of 104-yards, including a 90-yard pick-six in the third quarter. He also had five total tackles and one sack, one forced fumble, and one pass break up.  
 
SPECIAL TEAMS:  Ethan Klapatch | Millsaps | Junior | Metairie, La. – Continued his standout season, averaging 45.5 yards per kick on 11 punts against Trinity. He knocked a long of 56-yards and had four kicks sail over 50-yards. The junior also added a 56-yard kickoff and had two tackles.
 
Notable Performances:
  • Tucker Horn (Trinity) - Engineered four straight touchdown drives at the start of No. 5/6 Trinity's 63-0 win over Millsaps on Saturday afternoon. Despite playing just one drive after halftime, Horn tossed four touchdown passes and completed 18-of-26 passes for 187 yards.
  • Jack Gohmann (Centre) - In three quarters of action, Gohmann completed 17 of 22 passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns as the Colonels cruised to victory.
  • Evan Reeder (Rhodes) – Accounted for 185 yards and led Rhodes to a home victory. He had nine rushes for 58 yards and hit 13-of-19 through the air for 127 yards and a touchdown.
  • Caleb Harmel (Trinity) - Led a dominating defensive performance that pitched a shutout over Millsaps. He led the team with five tackles in limited action due to the lopsided score, collecting 1.5 tackles for loss and a seven-yard sack. He also contributed to special teams with a blocked punt. The Tigers allowed a paltry 79 total yards in the game, which included just 14 rushing yards.
  • Douglas Dallas (Centre) - The fifth year defensive end set career highs with nine tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks as well as a forced fumble, helping the Colonels shut down Sewanee’s offense.
  • Evan Byrd (Rhodes) – Snagged an interception and racked up 10 tackles in Rhodes win over Birmingham-Southern.  
  • Will Taylor (Trinity) - Piled up 119 yards on six punt returns to help lead No. 5/6 Trinity to a 63-0 victory over Millsaps on Saturday afternoon. Taylor's yardage total is the seventh-most in school history.
  • Scotty Brown (Centre) - Made five returns for Centre special teams on Saturday against Sewanee and gave the Colonels great field position all five times. In addition to his two touchdown catches in the first half, Brown averaged 14 yards per punt return and his ability to flip the field helped the Centre offense make quick drives in the game.
  • Myles Kruger (Rhodes) – Was stellar in the kicking game on Saturday. The newcomer hit six kickoffs for 368 yards and two touchbacks.
