SAA 2023 Women’s Basketball Report – January 8

Atlanta, Ga. – Two teams remain unbeaten in conference play after the first full weekend of the SAA women’s basketball with Millsaps and Rhodes sitting atop the standings. The Majors moved to 4-0 in league play and 13-2 overall after wins over Sewanee and previously conference unbeaten Centre. Rhodes has won three in a row and joins Millsaps tied for first place in the conference. Centre and Berry are tied for third in the league at 2-1.

Athlete of the Week:
Haley Franklin | Millsaps| Junior | Baton Rouge, La.  –averaged 29.7 points per game, 5.7 rebounds per game and two assists per contest. The junior also shot a combined 59.2 percent from the floor (32-of-54) and led the Majors to three victories. In a 70-64 triumph at BSC, Franklin netted 26 points, six boards and a steal. She then tallied 30 points, five rebounds and five assists in an 86-59 home win against Sewanee. The Baton Rouge, La., product finished the week with a season-high 33 points (11-19 FG; 8-12 FT) to go along with six rebounds and an assist in a 69-58 decision over Centre.
 
Notable Performances:
  • Kenadie Lee (Berry) – averaged 13.5 points and three assists in two games. The junior had a 25-point game against Rhodes, going almost perfect from the free-throw line (14-15).
  • Giana Vlahakos (Rhodes) – across three games, put up 14.3 points and 10.67 rebounds. She posted double-doubles in all three games, including 22 points and 11 rebounds against Hendrix.
  • Bailey Rucker (Centre) - Over the two games of the week, the junior collected 39 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, and went 10-13 at the line. She netted 22 with eight rebounds against Birmingham-Southern
  • Cydney Wright (Sewanee) – averaged 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds a game. She was one rebound away from a double-double this weekend as she posted 16 points and nine rebounds in Sewanee’s first win over Birmingham-Southern in five years on Sunday.
