SAA Women’s Basketball Report – January 29

Atlanta, Ga. – SAA leader Millsaps got back to its winning ways and jumped out to a 1.5 game lead in the conference standings with three weeks left in the regular season. The Majors are 9-1 in the league and are just ahead of Centre and Rhodes, both at 7-2 in league play. The Majors will match-up with the Colonels on February 4 and host Rhodes on Feb. 9.  Berry is 6-3 and in fourth place in the league. The top-four teams in the final standings earn home games for the 2024 SAA Tournament.

Athlete of the Week:
Elyse Warren | Millsaps | Sophomore | Memphis, Tenn.  – posted back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 18 points and 15.5 rebounds for the SAA leading Majors. In a 66-46 win over Oglethorpe, Warren tallied 16 points, 11 rebounds, two steals and one assist. She then netted 20 points and 20 boards in a 75-54 win against Berry on Sunday. She combined to shoot 61.9 percent from the floor (13-of-21) and secured her seventh double-double in the last 10 games.
 
Notable Performances:
  • Keimarya Rivera (Oglethorpe) – recorded her second and third-straight double-double over the weekend, bringing her season total to eight. The sophomore averaged 21.5 points and 10.5 rebounds, shooting nearly 60 percent from the field.
  • Ava Knoedl (Hendrix) - After an eight point performance versus Centre on Friday night, Knoedl responded to drop a career-high 27 points in a tight loss to Sewanee on Sunday afternoon. The sophomore was 8-of-13 from the field and 3-of-7 from deep, and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the stripe.
  • Elly Callihan (Berry) - posted two double-doubles across both SAA games this weekend. Averaging 35 minutes a game she shot 50% from the field against BSC with 10 rebounds and 19 points, defeating the Panthers. Against current SAA leader Millsaps she had 14 and 14 (a new season high). She averaged 16.5 points and 12 rebounds during the weekend.
  • Sheraton Foster (Birmingham-Southern) – drilled a game-winning 3-pointer with two seconds left to lift BSC over Oglethorpe and cap off a 25-point night. She laso had five assists and four steals in the game. The weekend started with 12 points, four assists and three rebounds against Berry.
  • Bailey Rucker (Centre) - as the Colonels leading scorer, the junior amassed 26 points, three blocks, six assists, and nine rebounds. She went a perfect 4-4 at the line, supplementing her 10-27 from the floor. In the contest versus Hendrix, Rucker's threes in the first half were necessary points for the Colonels to get ahead and stay ahead.
  • Cydney Wright (Sewanee) - had a career-high 25 points in Sewanee’s win over Hendrix. Wright also added four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. She was 6-of-7 from the field and 3-of-3 behind the arc, and was 10-of-14 from the charity stripe. On Friday, she posted 17 points, five rebounds, an assist, and a steal. 
  • Avery Marsh (Rhodes) – averaged 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and four assists in two games over the weekend. She played all 40 minutes in a pivotal win over Centre, leading the way with 20 points and six rebounds.
