SAA Women’s Basketball Report – February 5

Atlanta, Ga. – Heading into the final full weekend of the SAA season, the women’s basketball conference title is very much still up for grabs with four teams in contention. Millsaps is in the driver’s seat, sitting at 10-2 with home games against Rhodes and Hendrix to close the season. Centre picked up a key victory over the Majors on Sunday and sit a half game back at 9-2. The Colonels travel to Berry and Oglethorpe on the weekend before hosting Sewanee in the season finally on Valentine’s Day. Berry and Rhodes are both lurking in a tie for third with 8-3 marks in the league.
 
The top-four seeds will host first round games on Sunday, February 18. The semifinals and finals will take place at the highest remaining seed February 24-25.

Athlete of the Week:
Olivia Falvey | Sewanee | Sophomore | Boston, Mass.  – tallied her second and third double-doubles of the season in a weekend split for the Tigers. The sophomore tied her career-high 26 points with 10 rebounds on Friday against Millsaps. She came back with 22 points and 12 rebounds in Sewanee’s win over Birmingham-Southern on Sunday.   
 
Notable Performances:
  • Garin Freeman (Millsaps) - had a strong road weekend where the Majors split at Sewanee and Centre. Freeman averaged 16 points, 4.5 rebounds, five assists and 1.5 steals, while shooting 50 percent (8-16 FG). On Friday against the Tigers, she netted 18 points, four rebounds, two steals and dished out a career-high eight assists.
  • Avery Marsh (Rhodes) – averaged 21.5 points and six rebounds in a pair of games for the Lynx. Against Oglethorpe, she went 12-of-17 from the field and netted 27 points with eight rebounds and three assists.
  • Makya Grinter (Centre) – led the Colonels to a pair of key victories, averaging 14 points and 5.5 rebounds for the weekend. She was big in Centre’s win over SAA leader Millsaps, recording 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.
  • Kenadie Lee (Berry) - led Berry in both weekend wins with 16-points and seven rebounds against Hendrix and eight-points with six rebounds against Rhodes.
  • Ava Knoedl (Hendrix) - dropped a career-high 29 points versus Oglethorpe to lead the Warriors to its first SAA win. The sophomore knocked down 7-of-12 attempts from behind the arc to cap her best shooting performance of the season to date. She followed that up with eight points on Sunday afternoon versus Berry.
